Hey there,

Still getting the hang of sexing these wonderful shrimp and am unsure of what sex these two blue bolts are?

Any thoughts?? I am leaning towards both being female.

I can never be sure either but can you also show the length of their antennae because that may help , males should be close to double body length

I was thinking no1's deeper colour and slightly more slender abdomen might lend to being male, but so not good at this part of it!!

I'm going to go with Gaz, male, female. Keep us updated on this cause there's a new way I think I have found to determine sex but I'm still researching this & these threads are helping greatly if I can get confirmation. :victorious:

Will let you know when I find out for sure.

You may have to share your new theory Squiggs (PM me) I am intrigued and can test it out on some of my other shrimp for confirmation too!!

Promise not to share!!

The 1st series of pics posted, 1st Male & 2nd Female.

The 2nd serier of pics posted, 1st Female & 2nd Male.

As they mature, and are at breeding age, the width/shape of their body (slender is male, rounded female), their antenna (male is much longer), rounded abdominal (female)...etc are all telling signs.... some are dead easy to identify, but some are difficult no doubt.

Hope I haven't confused the situation :-)

It's amazing how they have changed in only a few weeks. I have kept the order the same in both series.

Originally I had thought darker was male and am now leaning toward female.

Guess I will just have to be patient. They are obviously still developing.

Thanks BB and everyone for your input, will advise if berries happen. Then I'll know for sure!!!

Finally an answer for one of them.....

This one has been the first in this thread and has finally turned out to be female.

Divided my tank a couple of weeks ago so I have black mischling and TB in section 1, reds in next and kept the Bluebolts by themselves. So the bubs should be pure...

She only showed full berry last week! Will advise once bubs drop. Haven't been able to check out eggs thoroughly as she is being difficult and hiding her tummy!!

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
