Recommended Posts

newbreed

Hey there,

Still getting the hang of sexing these wonderful shrimp and am unsure of what sex these two blue bolts are?

Any thoughts?? I am leaning towards both being female.

I can never be sure either but can you also show the length of their antennae because that may help , males should be close to double body length

I was thinking no1's deeper colour and slightly more slender abdomen might lend to being male, but so not good at this part of it!!

I'm going to go with Gaz, male, female. Keep us updated on this cause there's a new way I think I have found to determine sex but I'm still researching this & these threads are helping greatly if I can get confirmation. :victorious:

Will let you know when I find out for sure.

You may have to share your new theory Squiggs (PM me) I am intrigued and can test it out on some of my other shrimp for confirmation too!!

Promise not to share!!

The 1st series of pics posted, 1st Male & 2nd Female.

The 2nd serier of pics posted, 1st Female & 2nd Male.

As they mature, and are at breeding age, the width/shape of their body (slender is male, rounded female), their antenna (male is much longer), rounded abdominal (female)...etc are all telling signs.... some are dead easy to identify, but some are difficult no doubt.

Hope I haven't confused the situation :-)

It's amazing how they have changed in only a few weeks. I have kept the order the same in both series.

Originally I had thought darker was male and am now leaning toward female.

Guess I will just have to be patient. They are obviously still developing.

Thanks BB and everyone for your input, will advise if berries happen. Then I'll know for sure!!!

Finally an answer for one of them.....

This one has been the first in this thread and has finally turned out to be female.

Divided my tank a couple of weeks ago so I have black mischling and TB in section 1, reds in next and kept the Bluebolts by themselves. So the bubs should be pure...

She only showed full berry last week! Will advise once bubs drop. Haven't been able to check out eggs thoroughly as she is being difficult and hiding her tummy!!

That's the way to go I reckon.

Same here with my chillers. One Teco branded and the other Hailea. Both are do the same. Those are small temp differences and nothing to worry about. Also, depending on where the temp probe, you can get different temps in one tank. For example, the temps on the leftmost side of the tank can be a few degrees off compared to the rightmost side of the tank. It's just how it is.

I really want one now, lol. I’ve looked at pictures and I want one!😂   Side note, but related, I joint an all shrimp group on FaceBook. The shrimp these people are breeding are breathtaking.

Don't worry about Crystal browns as they are so rare you are unlikely to get one, but if you do you won't want to cull it or give it away (just treasure it, I would), that would be madness.................. (scroll down for picture)! Simon

Thanks. I’m not too concerned, if I get some browns, I’ll cull them into the cull tank. My buddy has a 75 gallon he wants to stock up with anything I don’t want, so the culls have a permanent home. I’m not looking to develop a super straight or pure line anyway, I just like the shrimps. Besides, I already have both in the tank😂 Top off is done with pure RODI, this is something I learned from salt tanks. Thanks for the advice, but I assume it has to do with feeding ETC since I’ve been using pure water for top offs. Ah, I gotcha. Thanks for the response. I’ve really noticed the creep increasing since I’ve started dosing the Shrimp Fit. While it isn’t a lot, it’s more than when I was dosing just BacterAE. Previously I saw less of an increase. My main concern was how it may affect the shrimp.     With the mix of CBS/CRS, what ratio of browns might I end up with? Will they have similar patterns to other crystals, but with the colored portion being brown? I actually don’t hate that.... Based on my reading, the brown should be somewhat the odd one out, correct? And if I’m not mistaken, somewhat of a generational dependent mutation. 2-3 generations in or so?
