Raising GH and lowering?

Hi all

I've been busy but still keeping my shrimp tank going well. Did a WP test last night and everything was good except the GH raisen to 7. It was pretty stable at 6 for a long time especially since I use RO water with SSM mix.

Aquarium water tests 11/8 7pm

GH = 7

KH = not tested

Ammonia = 0

Nitrate = 0

Nitrite = 0

pH = 5.9

TDS = 160

EC = 340-350

Temp = 22.8c

It's not affecting my shrimps for now as I've got 2 berried mischlings. Awaiting for mischlings and TW shrimplets soon.

Any ideas why it's crept up? How would you slowly bring it back down?

I'll double check with another WP test tonight and on the RO water as well.

There's a couple of ways to reduce general hardness but I'm interested to know if your carbonate hardness has risen too. You can either use straight RO water, IAL is another water softener, peat moss or Macropore gold. Have you added any calcium or magnesium? Epsom salts will raise GH. Have you added any new rocks? :encouragement:

Nothing has been added since establish the tank. I'll do KH test as well tonight. I've got lots of IAL but haven't added any into this tank yet as I'm trying to keep it minimal and simple. Might put a 1/4 of a IAL in the nano if required.

Those WP looks great.....I don't think the shrimps will have any issues with GH 7, just observe their moults, and if all successful, I'd leave it, rather then tinker.

Berried mishlings sounds interesting.... Who was the dad ! TB ?

I'm trying to increase my GH and KH to 10, without increasing TDS and PH.

Bb did you say you're trying to increase the kh to 10? I don't know if its a stupid question or not as I thought it should be kept as low as possible? If you are trying to increase it what is the benefit?

Thanks BB. These are Dean's F4 mischlings as I'm giving them a go and see if any TBs appears. So I'm quite keen on the two berried females on what comes out!

Did another test to confirm GH 7 and KH 2. I'll stick with it for now as they are all moulting ok. Still doing monthly 10% WC so I can tweak it later with IAL or something.

Sounds like WP for Tigers KH: 4 – 8 GH: 6 – 10 ;)

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

      Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

      You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
