Your favourite fish for feeding culls !

Witnessed a member feeding his culls to a flowerhorn, and although I cringed at first, it all got very exciting ! Still feels like I'm betraying the shrimps though ! :-(

But for a small tank (10lt).... Any suggestions ? Betta's ?

I originally bought my first red cherries to feed my Betta Macrostoma's but after a few I just couldn't do it any more & then the addiction kicked in, hahahaha :encouragement:

I could never feed a shrimp to any fishes after keeping them. The shrimps work so hard to clean our tanks and they are so defenseless.

Hey BB,

Killifish are great in a 10L tank. Adult killies are good shrimp disposal units :smiley_simmons:

Have to agree dude, at first they were food but I just can't do it any more :victorious:

The inability to expand my MTS, and my constant culling regime, is causing excess culls..... I do forward good culls, but wild type cherries and others and really of little use to any selective program, and I don't really wish to spread these around as they will dilute the quality of any colony....so, it is with huge reluctance. :-(

You could always put them all in a heavily planted fish tank and let them have a chance of survival in there.

Give them a fighting chance.

I tried feeding a bunch of clear and wild types from my chocs to my gf's betta.

After about a month, he only ate one and all the shrimp turned black to blend in.

Thats why I really wish I still had our Betta Macrostoma or Foerschi, they absolutely loved culls. And really great watching them hunt, very basic and raw

I have some culls that I put in my large fish tank when I first started culling and most of them are still there although I only see them when I give the tank a good clean. I have large angels , female bettas , Cory varieties , large BN , Endlers and Clown Loaches I thought the shrimp would be well and truly gone by now its been over 6 months, however I haven't put anymore in there because I feel sorry for them having to hide so much of the time.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
