death everywhere

Hi all, had a really bad weekend for shrimp and I need to vent. I got some water conditioner from some local markets the other week, it was fairly cheap but the stall was selling some shrimp stuff and told me it would be ok with shrimp, i used it yesterday for water changes. My mishlings are all dead and one female just dropped last week, I managed to save 3 rillis, 1 choc and 3 wild type cherry. One of the rilis is berried so all is not lost.

I have moved the last of the cherries into a 4ft I had setup ( i was going to setup a crystal display) and have shut all the other tanks down for sterilizing. I have tested the water with and without the conditioner and I get a reading of 1 ammonia without the conditioner and a reading of 5 after adding it :(.

Long story short, dont change what works just to save a couple of bucks.

Sorry for the downer, mick

Sorry to hear that smicko. Thats a huge jump in Ammonia (1 to 5) but your water shouldnt have any ammonia. RO is the best option as you dont need water conditioner to use it. If you do have to then i suggest you use Prime.

Have you had a word with the shop? So that they dont sell it as shrimp safe.

Thanks mate, I normally use prime but thought I would try something different, I will never change again. I thought my tap water shouldnt have ammonia so that was a little puzzling. I got from the local markets so I will go and see them next weekend.

Sorry to hear mate. Must be heart-breaking to see the dead shrimp everywhere. Hopefully what you have left will survive and you can salvage from there.

Oh crap dude! That's such a bummer dude, I'm sure the stall won't give a sh!t either which is the saddest part. If you need anything just give me a hoy & I'll see what I can do. As everyone has mentioned, RO is the way of the future & they are so cheap now. If it's any consolation, I've pulled the pin on the NitraGard test as I couldn't get the TDS below 180. I lost a whole drop of mischling shrimplets including TBM'sâ„¢, about 15-20 in the end :encouragement:

Can you name and shame please, so this doesn't happen to anyone else ?

I'm not sure that will benefit anyone other than people from the southside of BrisVegas, the important thing to learn from this is to be weary of cheap crap being sold at markets. If anyone really wants to know the exact market & stall then they should PM Smicko. I can tell you now that I will never buy stuff for my shrimp from a market, fish maybe but definitely not shrimp, just not worth the risk :victorious:

You're right of course, however, if it helps even one other person to avoid it, it's worth the effort of naming the product.

I don't mean Smicko should go into vendor bashing. There is no further need, we already know this product is not worth purchasing.

the product might be sold in a BrisVegas market stall, but it could also be sold at markets in Sydney or God forbid, in some LFS.

As for the name im not sure as their was no english writing on the container. Got myself an ro unit today and will set it up tonite.

Thanks to everyone who replied its now time to rebuild. I have decided on a cherry display tank with all the colours and I will source some more mish to go with them.

Sorry to hear.

I guess to learn from this we should stick to the brands that have been tried and tested.

Lol, fair point dude, I think the lesson I have learn't from Smicko's misfortune is, never buy products if you can't read the label to identify what it really is for yourself :encouragement:

Haha funny man lol. I have been meaning to get one for ages but it kept getting shuffled to the bottom of the list.

Should I start with 100% ro with minerals or use some tap water mixed in?. Or could I start doing water changes on the tank their in and slowly convert them to the ro water?.

I'd get the change over done as quick as possible with 100% RO & SS to reduce the amount of stress on the shrimp, like ripping of a bandaid, lol :encouragement: Check the TDS in your tank, do some calculations to see what the optimum TDS of the RO water should be to get the correct TDS once the WC is done then go for it :victorious:

I have been doing small wc's daily with straight RO to get Tds down, however in your situation maybe a bigger change with minerals added would be better.

I'd suggest the same for you Wraithie, the quicker you get the TDS right & the quicker there will be less stress on the shrimp & they will be more comfortable sooner, you don't want to draw it out too long cause they will be stressed for as long as it takes you to get the WP right :victorious:

I'm pretty sure when I asked the question I was told take the shrimp out, completely change the water to RO with salty shrimp use same substrate , filter etc then reacclimatise the shrimp to the new water. If filter, substrate plants etc are all established it should be safe to put the shrimp back in. I did this with no problems at all. It is better for the shrimp rather than lots of small changes.

I remember Dean suggesting that method, I just couldn't remember whether he said to do 100% or not, I do now, thanks for refreshing my memory Ineke :victorious:
