I just remember that I did put the Sterile Polystyrene plastic petri dish (bought from flebey) before the nightmare come. Does it be a reason?

In one of my tanks I have SSS CBS

TDS 300+

GH 13

PH 6.4-7.4 co2

No issues with molting for months

In my opinion, it is what you feed them rather than calcium in the water column. I feed them gravidas + white pellet (calcium food) and never had any problems even with crazy GH and TDS

Ofcourse. I am washing everything before putting into the tank, even my hand whenever I use the net to take the dead shrimp out.

If you use soap then that may be why your shrimps are dying

A candid photo of BlueBolts checking his Calcium levels

mad-scientist_zpscd0f21a3.jpg

haha what a crack up!! nice one :encouragement: its funny how his so focused and committed to finding the precise calcium ratio that he even tucked his tie into his shirt!! :p

just wondering does anyone use the azoo mineral plus? i use only 4-5 drops instead of the 10ml recommended. does this add anything like magnesium? i see regular moults after using it.

i find it hard to believe that with all the different products including shrimp specialised soil, foods, minerals, beneficial bacteria from top brands like benibachi, mosura and shirakura (not to mention the German made Salty Shrimp) that when disaster hits we find ourselves fleeing to bunnings or where ever to buy epsom salts to add magnesium for calcium levels to be sufficient. i mean its an amazing find/discovery.. and might just be the trick to no more 'mystery deaths'.. but surely im not the only one puzzled by the fact that these leading brand products don't properly account for this issue of calcium deficiency, if at all. does this mean that white pellet doesn't really work if there is no magnesium in the water to make good of the calcium rich food?

its just strange that with all the $100's spent on specialty shrimp products at the end of the day it's a $10 bunnings DIY magnesium ratio that does the trick :p hats off to ya BB!!!

It would be the other way around. Low Calcium levels.

But you also need magnesium to unlock the Ca for the shrimp and plants to use it.

Also, magnesium doesn't deplete naturally, only with water changes.

But Calcium depletes as it's used up by plants and shrimp (or snails, or anything with a shell).

So it's calcium that needs to be checked and replaced in a tank regularly.

Salty shrimp might have Ca in it.

But how much is in your tank? You won't know until you get a Calcium test kit.

SaltyShrimp does have both Ca & Mg & both are used by shrimp in one way or another. I checked my ratio & it was 5:1 so I had to dose Mg, only a pinch though. So as jayc said, you need to get a Ca test kit to be sure :victorious:

Wouldn't low Mg levels cause the Ca to be unusable for shrimp, so even if the Ca levels are correct it's useless without Mg?

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
