i have tried i.a.l. but found that mulberry leaves do the same thing and are easier to get. whenever i go away i par boil some and drop them in the tanks of shrimp and all veg eating fish. come home 1-2 weeks later and the water is still clear and tests well. you can also freeze them for later use. hope this helps.

cheers, mick

If I place 4 or 5 large leaves in my 45cm cube the water will be slightly tea coloured.

I put a medium size leaf into my 2ft tank, it will go completely dark brown/dark tea colour after a few days maybe 1 week. Are you suppose to remove it before this happens?

You leave until it totally breaks down. The tea or brown colour is the tannins coming out. It's the good stuff that will soften your water, lower pH and anti bacterial. If you don't want it then soak it for 3 days before add into tank.
