Starting a tiger shrimp tank

Shrimpy

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, after crossing many elegant and attractive pictures of tiger shrimps, i too have been struck with these tiger shrimps. Thus, i am planning to begin a tiger shrimp only tank. It will be a 2ft tank.

For the water i am planning to go with RO water with Salty Shrimp GH+ mineral. ( Is RO water necessary for tiger shrimps? or can i go with tap water?)

Inert black quartz soil and some driftwood with mosses. For filtration i intend it to consist of maybe a HOB filter and two sponge filters. ( Should i go with canister or HOB?)

Any suggestions welcome!:)

IMHO, RO water is important, as it eliminates the inconsistency/inpurity that can occur with tap water.

+1 for the cannister too.

+1agree withe everyone, definitely RO & SS minerals, canister is much more effective than a HOB but, personally, I'd use sponge filters as well & a specialty substrate is definitely the go with these little fellas. If you get the basics of the tank right before you set it up the easier it will be to keep stable perameters later on :victorious:

Which type of subtrates would you guys suggest?

All my tanks have benibachi soil.....TB's are in 80mm thick substrate, and Tigers in 50mm thick substrate, which buffers my PH to approx. 6.8. As I'm creating Tibee's/Variations, I want me Tigers to be bred in WP closer to my TB's.

but if i used inert black gravel, wouldnt it be fine as my Ph would only be 7.0 and i dont think i would needbuffeing soil since the SS minerals would buffer the gh and kh wouldnt it?

Would it be possible to sprinkle some fulvic grains to stop the ph from creeping up?

Prevention is better then a cure, so why not use a buffering soil to start thing off ? I do use fulvic grains, but on soil that's gettng exhausted, and/or if I'm experimenting and trying to reduce my PH levels.

No disrespect to your way of keeping them, but the reason why i want to use inert gravel is so that i can achieve a ph of 7 or higher plus i wouldn't need to rescape the tank if the soil starts to ' break' down.

There's 100's of ways to breed tigers, and in numerous WP etc.... so no right/wrong, if they're breeding and you have a successful colony, that's the right way :encouragement:

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
