fighting angels

my 2 largest angels who used to swim together have started fighting. There is room for them to retreat from each other but I'm not sure if they should be separated- hope not don't have another tank. They are almost 12 months old and have been very peaceful up until this last week. I have 5 angels in a 200 litre deep and wide tank. I think they are both the same sex as they both have a sloping forehead but not 100% sure. Any suggestions on what I should do? They haven't damaged each other and seem to just dart at each other , swim around each other and then 1 will go and hide.

I might google courtship but it doesn't seem terribly friendly.:(

I'm pretty sure they are fighting for dominance as the females reach maturity & become ready to breed :encouragement:

You will probably need to get rid of one or they will more then Likely fight until the death

Ok thanks -I have looked at some courtship rituals on google now and it may be that. I will keep an eye on them but if it gets any rougher I will take one to the LFS they are quite nice golden ones so they should take one.:D

tubes3.jpg

found this on another site and permission was given to be allowed to use it. I am now going to have a look to see if as Nic puts it I have a sharp pencil or a rubber- good analogy

Right the one causing the trouble is definitely a male the other one has only a very tiny tube at the moment and hard to see if it is pointy. Will leave them a bit longer to see if it comes down any further. Apparently this is the only 100% way to sex them and also Discus.

So should the aggressor go or the one that is being picked on?

You answered you own question on sexing, all the BS about sloping heads and different fins is exactly that total BS, breeding tubes is the only 100% way.

I have talked to and dealt with "experts over the years and they all, with out fail come undone.

One of my favourite expert myth is, sexing Saratoga and Mangrove Jacks, we will be doing keyhole surgery on both to selected brood stock and yes I will post photos of it here when we do it. A Doctor mate is stitching them up for me.

I found the pictures very good and the explanation of a sharp pencil or a eraser just made it very simple. One is definitely male the other one is only just showing.

I hope you show some pictures Bob that should be a very interesting operation. Hopefully there will be an easier way of sexing them though.:encouragement:

No easy way Ineke and I need to know to keep Males and Females separated for conditioning, it a harmless operation and they are anesthetized for the whole procedure, I have done it before wit no losses or problems with the fish.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
