CBS Hard To Explain?

It never ceases to amaze me at what turns up in my shrimp tanks at times.

Yesterday I was poking about in a small divided section of my fire red cherry tank.( this area is where I put the better quality fires when I find them) anyway to cut a long story short, I had just pulled out a couple of java fern when I noticed a Crystal black scuttling away. this totally amazed me as I have not had any crystals for around a year so you can imagine haw surprised I was! This morning when I went up again( just to prove I was not seeing things) there she was again "BUT" she was accompanied by a little one about 5mm long.

My dilemma is :- I have not owned any crystals for at least 12 months, when I had crystals they were kept in my tank in the house, they all died, ( the other tanks are in the open upstairs) There has only ever been red cherries in the tank, Wait there is more!!!! how come there is a baby ????? There is only two of them.no males, in a tank full of cherries.

So now I am the proud owner of Two CBS that are a mystery. the second picture is the large female the others are the little guy. here are some pictures!

had any new plants lately that she could have hitch hiked on? She looks a nice shrimp too

no nothing has been added, all my plants are home grown, still none the wiser!

Wow, I can see a double SS grade. Maybe you should try keeping crystals again now you have some females. Nice find mate.

I had a mystery shrimplet in my tank too. It was a yellow cherry like the others but still....I didn't notice any shrimplets when I put them in first and none of them was berried. :confused:

But your case is far stranger than that! Maybe someone is trying to play a trick on you and put the CBS in there when you were not looking. ;)

Yeh mate they were the last ones I had, I thought that they had all died off, The big female could be one of yours but it doesn't explain the little one. and again none of the shrimp you sent me were kept outside. These guys are roughing it because they are being kept in definite cherry shrimp conditions "no frills" must be tough

its very very strange indeed! it definitely makes u wonder huh?

i too have something unusal happening in my tank which reads similar to this thread title.

i only have CRS s,ss and sss, Golds and some Neo shrimp (except for recently purchased TB's but that's another story all together). i have a crap load of shrimplets at the mo but i noticed a couple weeks ago i saw a single CBS. and it is very dark black not a washed out black or brown. a couple weeks later theres about 10 of them. they are mostly s,ss grade.

im completely stumped too as i know there is no possibility of CBS parents as i have never bought any. and their not mischlings as the TB's only been in the tank for a week.

just a quick pic to show the difference.. and remember theres no CBS parents!!!

do these random things just happen? similar to how mischlings can pop randoms from the TB genes they carry?

i wonder what the big boys have to say on the subject? Dean?? Bluebolts?? any random experiences??

OK OK Everyone mystery solved! it turns out that the shrimp in question are shrimp that I won at our qld SKF get together. I had Completely forgotten about them. thanks Jeff for the heads up I definitely would not have had any sleep tonight:cower::stupid:

I think somewhere along the line there would have been a CBS. I have the opposite, my CBS pop out CRS babies :)

All 4 of my cbs tanks have shrimp from 4 different sellers from 3 different states and am still trying to find cbs that dont throw crs

+1 on ninja's comments. This is where selective breeding is critical.... to get the purity of PRL's, no GB/SW, and CBS genes... They need to be totally bred out. DITTO on PBL's. if you look really closely to the red of your CRS, and black of your CBS, and noticed that they haven't got the purity of its respective colour, i.e, CBS, looks brown, or not quite black, then there's some CRS/SW/GB genetics through them. This is why a SS CRS (breeding true, and selectively bred) can cost $100, and other SS CRS cost $25. Then there's the coloured head, painted legs, vibrance in colour, shell thickness... Oh boy.....if it was easy, this forum wouldn't exist !

its unfortunate that there are still a lot of breeders saying CRS and CBS don't interbreed so they keep them together . There are several people here in Adelaide advertising them for sale from mixed tanks and very adamant about it. Unfortunately two of these breeders advertise the most and the second one got his shrimp from the first so lots of mixed shrimp here.
