anyone who has bought black cherries especially myself. here's a little bit of info on what can happen to your blacks if they are in low ph and gh!!!

i did an experiment with two tanks, one i dropped with heaps of IAL to reduce ph and another i used RO water to lower minerals. the blacks turned a reddish brown in the ro water and as for the ial..... :(

so don't use low ph guys. high ph and gh please

is anyone finding these same results with lower ph tanks? or could black substrate keep the cherries still black?

these are my blacks in optimum conditions atm

Gbang could you let us know what your optimum WP's are for your Blacks or is that an insider secret:encouragement:. I am slowly changing my tanks to RO with Saluwesi salts but I have noticed a loss of colour compared to when I used filtered pura tap water. I was about to do total RO water for my cherries but think I might stick to what I had going by your observations.

My water parameters are Gold Coast tap water which is 70tds and topped up with Sulawesi minerals until TDS is 150-200. That's it!!! Midnight gravel or bare bottom for me so I can selectively breed :) it is possible my shrimp are adapted to my conditions and that they can go back to black from f 2-3 breeding?

Colour change due to stress? Will be interesting to see if they colour back up. Has anyone tried similar tests with other colours?

Thanks Gbang I am in the middle of completely changing A) direction and B) switching tanks etc so that helps me to sort out that I shouldn't go with the RO for the Cherries. My pura tap takes a lot of impurities out of the water and I've noticed that they have much more colour when in that plus the salts. :encouragement:

My TDS is at least double that, how does that figure? lol

Thanks for sharing the experiment Gbang. I'm keeping my black cherries in PH 5.5-6. I heavily cull them, and only have a dozen or so black cherries within this WP. Keeping them in benibachi substrate, so dark substrate. My experiment is based on keeping them with my GB/SW, so that they can co-exist within the same tank. The cherry don't produce as frequently, and % survival of shrimplets don't appear that great, but that's just an accepted fact for me.

Bb. I believe yours are still doin well due to the high ec and TDS I your water parameters, but it would also mean your black cherries are probably strong an truer in Colour ;)

Perhaps we can trade and officially have me as 1st dips on Dean's greens.... LOL I'll try to take some macro pics, and see how good/bad the black is...

What does macro shots have to do with anything.

We were wondering what your superior blacks would do if put into high Ph water????

I use macro to truly determine the quality of the shrimp in colour/thickness etc..., the naked eye may see them as a solid black cherry, but under a macro with good lighting, it maybe dark choc/blue...etc..

I can see that! Does lighting make any difference?

Same tank/light .... the thickness of the shell really says it all.... at a macro/close range' date=' if there's no mottled to the colour, then the quality of the shrimp is assured.

There use to be a seller (not on SKF...cough cough), who always sold his shrimps with a video pic.....the reason he uses a video is because it is taken from a greater distance, thus the colour and shell thickness always looks good.
