Levamisole and shrimp?

Recommended Posts

Was looking at levamisole to clear a nematode outbreak with my fish. Have shrimp in there too and after reading several different threads and articles read 2 different stories.

so putting it out there. Will cherry shrimp survive a few doses of levamisole?

read this article that I found and somewhere in there it said crustaceans should be fine

then I read another article that said that inverts wont.

I have dosed L.... to rid some fish of camalanus worms and can say that i didnt notice a single dead shrimp through any of the 3 treatments.

That's good to hear. I'm not too worried as they are just a cleaning crew but I don't like killing things especially if I can help it.

Have given a dose of levamisole and the Cherrys are fine.

so I too can confirm that levamisole and cherry shrimp is ok.

Further to this, I have been treating a case of camalanus worms with Nilverm (Levamisole) and Panacur25 (fenbendazole) under the following schedule with no deaths noted amongst cherry shrimp or pest snails (mini ramshorns).

Day 1: Nilverm 1mL per 7L of tank water

Day 2: Panacur25 1mL per 40L of tank water

Day 3: Nothing

Day 4: Nothing

Day 5: Nothing

Day 6: Nothing

Day 7: 25% water change

Repeat schedule from Day 14 to kill any hatched eggs.

The enemy (camalanus worms)

Did that fish survive?

Pretty sure it is dead. The worms come out like that when the fish die.

Yeah it was dead. There was actually a bunch more worms pop out when I gave its guts a squeeze. Poor thing, must have been chock full of them. I always give dead fish a squeeze to check for worms, luckily I did as I hadn't noticed them in my bristlenoses (hide all the time) which were the ones who brought them in. Reminds me of when my step-brother in law bought a 12week old pup from a backyard breeder. When she was wormed, her crap for the next two days looked like spaghetti (without the sauce). Poor thing. Anyway moral of the story is quarantine your fish and don't buy from backyard dog 'breeders'.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
