Very cool dude' date=' the tank looks as stunning as ever :encouragement:[/quote']

Thanks Squiggle ... Looks much better after the trim.

Would have posted a couple of other pics with this update but it seems I have exhausted my quota... what's that about? Am I only allowed a few pics cause I am new, or am I using too big an image?

Awesome tank

Thanks Ineke, loving this new hobby of mine.... especially the shrimp.

Wanted to add a couple of what I thought were cool capture pics of the shrimp, but My quota is used :(

What an awesome tank! I just love the hairgrass lawn! That is so amazing!

How long did it take to grow it? I'm pretty sure you can upload more pics as your number of posts increases. :)

The hair grass (Eleocharis belem) lawn was planted 26th Feb and spread very quickly indeed. 4 weeks and it had pretty much covered the area intended..

I used huge lighting and DIY CO2 for that initial grow in period, algae was huge too .. but I strangled it by cutting lights to 50% and double dosing Liquid Carbon.

(No fauna in the tank at that stage) Now with the shrimp in there I have not replenished the CO2, am using about 60% of initial lighting and half dose of Liquid Carbon once per week at water change.

No detriment to the shrimp using this method and plants are still looking healthy. (Cherry Reds, Paratya and CRS,CBS)

Beautiful....should be very proud indeed. Love planted tanks !

Cheers mate... I am astounded by the success I have had with my first attempt. :)

You should be very proud of your success. I hope the shrimp keeping goes just as well for you.

I am proud of what I have achieved Ineke, I also hope I have good fortune with the shrimp side of things.

I have noticed 6 maybe 7 berried cherries ... so in a couple of weeks we shall see.. haha

Good stuff nothing better than berried shrimp. You have started off with a large number of cherries and if they like their conditions they multiply like crazy. Still have to raise the babies though. There are some great threads under food and nutrition giving the insider hints of feeding and keeping the shrimp healthy. I had berried cherries but didn't seem to have as many babies as I thought I should and now feed a much greater variety and make sure there is fine foods for the babies. I am gradually getting a good number but I did only start with 4 then eventually bought some more to about 14 adults. I can't tell you how many I have because they are in a heavily planted tank but feeding time there are a lot of little shrimp all over the place.

Thanks Squiggle that photo does no justice to their colour. Even some of the males are nicely coloured now but nowhere near the fire red yet!

Yeah I'm sure the collective painted fire program on this forum won't be too far away :encouragement:

Hopefully my tank will look similar to that soon Ineke, I have seen some very nice full blood red males in the mix and some equally red females as well... I can only hope they have bumped red to red ... lol

and I will see the good red colouration continue...

Eventually I would like to set up a dedicated breeder tank and see if I can selectively breed a few of those better reds. But for now I am content with the colony I have and as you say, successfully raise the young ones

to adult. I am learning though :)

If you seriously have got some good red males you may be interested in the breeding program Gbang and 2OFUS are doing. We haven't actually seen any really fire red males and that is what they are aiming for. If you can get a picture of a couple of your good males it would be of great interest to the program.

True Squiggle... but when I see all the amazing setups and shrimp that you all have and share pics of, I can't help but think beyond my 'noobiness' to much more advanced happenings. haha

...and thus is born another addict with MTS.

Sure Ineke , I think I already have a few pics of the males.... but I think my pic posting quota is still limited at the moment...

What I will do is send them to you as a Facebook PM ... and you can either post them on my behalf or pass them on to those concerned :)

I am still a new shrimp keeper my little collection started with 4 RCS given to me by someone I bought plants off. The most expensive "free" shrimp ever after getting me started. I got my first shrimp the week after xmas and thanks to this great forum I will have 5 tanks of shrimp by the end of the week! MTS in a bad way

Update to say that after a few gravel vacs, front wall scrub, moss / floating plant trim, that the condition seems to have improved.  My current theory is that it is due to waste / debris management, where "stuff" like that brown mulm accumulates in the substrate and behind the HMF filters.  Maybe some tanks can somehow deal with it, but mine can't.  Also another experienced shrimper suggested that maybe those "shell bugs" don't just live on the shrimps but also in this debris.  Maybe this is the reason some tanks fail due to "old tank syndrome" where all they need is a good gravel vac? Also, I am guessing that plant trim helps too because now more of the nutrients and light go into growing algae instead of more plants? Well anyway for this tank I will try weekly water change and monthly gravel vac / plant trim.  For my next tank, I'm thinking of something like an under-gravel system where this mulm can fall down and I vac it out.

Good to have an update and good to hear you are getting shrimplets, so hopefully your colony will continue and you may not get to the point where you have to cull some to stop over population. These type of shrimp only live 12 - 18 months so the adult deaths may be natural? If you have the time I would do weekly 25% water changes, adding the new water via a drip system and do some vacuuming clean of the substrate each week, even if only a different bit each week! See if that helps in a few months and if it does then stick with that regime? It should help reduce any build-ups that may be occuring!

Hello again, much belated update: The tank still has "cycles" of 1-2 month "good streaks" where everybody seems to be doing well, and then a bad streak where the short antenna problem shows up again, and a shrimp dies once every few days.  I am not sure what causes things to go bad, but usually over the course of a few days I will start to see more shrimp quietly standing on the HMF filter, and so I know something is wrong.  Since I am not "doing anything" besides the regular 1-2 week water changes, I just assume that something bad is building up.  Here's a list of things that I've tried that are supposed to be "can't hurt" but didn't prevent the problem either: Dose every other day with Shrimp Fit (very small dose, and the shrimp seem to like it) Sotching Oxydator Seachem Purigen to keep the nitrates lower Keeping the pH below 5.5 with peat Things that I don't do often, so could possibly "reset" the tank back to a good streak, are gravel vac and plant trim, so maybe time to try those again. One other problem I used to have was that sometimes a shrimp would suddenly stop eating with a full or partially full digestive tract that doesn't clear out, and then the shrimp will die within a few days.  I suspected it was one of the foods in my rotation - Shrimp Nature Infection, which contains a bunch of herbal plant things.  I've had this in my food rotation for a few years now and generally didn't seem to cause problems, but I removed it from the rotation anyway.  I don't have a lot of adult Golden Bees at this point so I can't really tell if it worked or not. Overall the tank is not too bad - during the good streaks occasionally a shrimp will get berried and hatch babies with a 33-50% survival rate.  So while there are fewer adults now, there are also a bunch of babies roaming around.  I guess this tank will stagger on, but I really do need to take the time to start up a new tank.  (or figure out the problem)

If that is the offspring, then the parents are unlikely to be PRL. I tend to agree with you. There are very few PRLs in Australia. And any that claim to be needs to show proof. PRL genes have to start as PRL. CRS that breed true after x generations doesn't turn it into a PRL. Neither can a Taiwan bee shrimp turn into a PRL despite how ever many generations. I've never seen a PRL with that sort of red colour. I have on Red Wines and Red Shadows - Taiwan bee shrimps. So somewhere down the line one of your shrimp might have been mixed with Taiwan bees and is no longer PRL. It just tanks one shrimp to mess up the genes of a whole colony.

Sorry, missed this one somehow! The PRL look fantastic and the odd ones look part PRL and part Red wine/Red shadow in the colour. They are still very beautiful but ideally should be seperated to help keep the PRL clean if you can do that.  Nice clear photos!
