What have i been doing you ask?

Recommended Posts

Well, i figured its been a while since i put up any of my shrimp photos.

I've been working and culling hard on getting better quality cherries. I was really happy with what i've done. Then i had a huge tank accident, wanted to see my shrimp better, so i changed my filters over and pulled out a ball of java moss that'd be 40cm*20cm*20cm been doing water changes every day since.

A couple of the casulaties.

Now when you said casualties did the ones you have photos of die or are they what was left? There are some nice shrimp there I love your big tank. Can you please tell what the middle plant is? Is it a sword or a crypt. I have one the same I think but don't know what it is, it is about the same size as yours by the look and was sold as a java fern but it definitely isn't a java. I definitely will be getting live plants for my fish they look so good.

Cheers

Ineke:encouragement:

When i said casualties, i meant those first two that i got pictures of died, sadly. As well as about a dozen others.

Big tanks my baby, just waiting on it all to grow in, replaced all the old plants with rare/expensive plants.

Its an amazon sword.

Damn that's a shame , why is it always the good ones that go!!!!

Thanks for the plant ID I had thought that was what I had I just want to put any nice live plants in the big aquarium but I need to finish with the shrimp tanks before I go back to that.

Yours looks good thanks for sharing.:encouragement:

Promise it'll look nicer in 2 weeks once they grow in a bit! Got some newies coming this week too. Total cost in the last 4 weeks has been $300 in plants haha. I wish the ugly ones would be the first to go... oh i wish.

I sold a few of my plants last week, had 100 bucks in my Paypal, was so excited that i spent it all on new plants. Now im broke again. Keen for public holiday pay next weekend, not keen in getting covered in prawns, oyster and fish juices.

Good move Robert, closer to uni? I've got 5 days a week at uni and 2-3 nights a week at woolies, more uni, less money! The killer is that i've got a 2 hour transit each way to uni each day, 20 hours a week stuck on a bus, so much time to go on the forum though. I would love to move out, but i love the beaches too much.

Yeah Ineke, i feel bad for the fish and the shrimp, they're losing swim space!

You could say its 'closer' to uni. To be honest its so im out of home, more tank space, independence, prove a point, closer to work etc.

Usually i would have to catch a train 3 stops and then get on the 1hr long bus ride to Wollongong Uni, but if i move out it'll eliminate the train rides and the bus stops 50m away. If i move closer to uni i wont be able to work (Wollongongs a dead spot to work in) A second positive would be that work is 200m away and i can just walk too and from work. I would usually drive to uni but my cars been in a crash and isnt driveable. Taking it to court because the police couldnt figure who was at fault.

You should honestly try and get more shifts at work, 2-3 shifts a week is scrap all, i just do all nights and have one off as per regulations.

Four hours on the bus everyday, i definitely cant handle that, dont know how you handle it.

Can't work much more, i have 9-5 at uni every day nearly, which means most days i leave at 7 and im back at 7. Study on top of that means i don't have much spare time. I am trying to get longer Sunday shifts though.

That sucks about your car, what a pain! Wollongong is a hell of a long way to go, lucky you have the train though!

Very nice but how much power do those lights need?

20W each mate :p Nobody believes me when i tell them this isn't high tech, no pressurised CO2, no expensive MH or t5HO. Those are LED flood lights.

I have a power meter and did a check the other day, with 4 planted tanks all with substantial lights on, i'm only using 200W/h.

Can I ask where you got those lights please? I need a light that I can move from tank to tank so I can see my shrimp .

I have those same lights, but 30w ones. I got mine off fleabay but you have to wire the plug on yourself.

Chris, your tank looks incredible! This is what i'd like to do with my display tank once i've got all my shrimps into the new rack...

Ah the good old uni days. It's a hard slog but it'll be worth it in the end! I'm still paying off my uni debt and will be for years, but i had my best times at uni :) what are you studying?

It must have been an aluminium heatsink. The Indium in Liquid metal will eat through aluminium. Only copper or nickel plated heatsinks can be used with liquid metal. It says so on the packet, at least my pack of Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut does.

I will try to add all the old tank's shrimps at the end of August to the new tank, had a problem with my chiller this morning, try to make it more efficient by adding a better heat sink grease, I added a liquid metal grease, apparently you can't add liquid metal, when heating up, the heat sink turning to dust, along with part of the cooler inlet and outlet. So far the shrimps are ok.

I have had the new shrimps a week and have ordered some new ones(10) for delivery friday. There are probably at least 6 of the 8 alive (they may even all be alive still) but as the tank is so densely planted it is difficult to tell, but I saw 2 black and 2 red this morning, as yesterday, but I'm sure 1 red and  1 black weren't the same as the ones I saw yesterday so there are probably at least 6, if that makes any sense??? Anyway that will be it for now and I will just let the tank and shrimps do there thing once this batch are in there in a couple of days, and I can get back to the usual routine as was, before this unfortunate event wiped out the last lot. All parameters are good, including the nitrates now, but there are a lot of brown patches on the plants and moss balls still......... It all looks a bit drab and uninspiring and brown!!! I probably just need to be a bit more patient? I will do some maintenance tomorrow and a small 2L water change, then the new shrimps will go in on friday after acclimatising. The shrimps were totally uninterested in the spinach or shrimp lolly I put in at the weekend but I am assuming they have so much biofilm at this stage that that is keeping them busy and well fed and they are staying under cover until they get used to their new environment and this strange ugly monster that keeps peering in at them through the glass from time to time? I guess if some 100ft tall bloke kept peering through my window a few times a day I would be a bit nervous/reserved shall we say? I removed the spinach and the shrimp lolly and put the shrimp lolly in the betta tank and within minutes there were 10 shrimp on it so there was definitely nothing wrong with that shrimp lolly! Traps don't work on hydra. Even with planaria, it is slow and it doesn't catch them all.
