Low PH for shrimp

Hi Guys,

i have just set up a new tank to experiment with even lower PH than i am already running...

My Crystal and TB tanks all run at PH 5.6 - 5.7 at the moment and they really love it.

But i want to see how fare i can push it so the new test tank i just set up has these parameters lol

just wondering whats the lowest PH anyone here has been able to maintain very consistently and

had shrimp living happily in there??????????????

I'll start with crystals first and if it works and shrimp can be acclimatized with out to many problems, I will then give the TB a go in there :)

ooo i dont know about this dean, you might find that the ph may denature the cells within the shrimp and not allow them to perform the functions that they should. wouldn't hurt to try

How thick is the soil in the tank for a pH of 4.5?

I'll be impressed when you can get shrimp to live in the pH of battery acid.

Had SW/GB on a Low PH tank @ 5.0...100mm Benibachi substrate in 26 lt tank. Shrimps survived well, no issues, BUT noticed the breeding rate /survival of shrimplets decrease substantially.... not sure whether this was 100% due to the low PH, but the tank is sitting at 6.2 now (9+month), and I have shrimplets and berried girls everywhere..

At low PH, "normal" bacteria won't live, and new types of bacteria would be created. Unsure of the shrimp function as Robert has mentioned, but I would think food would be the issue, as biofilm etc....wouldn't perhaps be as easily created within this environment. So feeding the shrimps would be a critical element to their success.

Great experiment, please do keep us posted.

I had my 45cm cube setup with 2x bags of Benibachi fulvic and 1x bag of benibachi fulvic super powder. The PH crept down to 4.8 over a week or so and sat there happily for a few months its now up slightly to 5.0 but when it was at its lowest I had 16 or so berried CRS/CBS and there was no issues with shrimplet survival. I have also been moving the shrimplets to a new tank which is running at a PH of 5.6 with pretty much no acclimatisation so I reckon they are pretty tough as I have seen no deaths.

Dean have you got an update on the low ph? How are the shrimp doing, survival of babies etc.:D

It does last longer LOL Just a shame your metal net dissolves everytime you try to catch one though. Shrimp safe alright, you'll never

get them out.

My question is why would u want them on such a low ph, wouldnt be more expensive to keep shrimp, by having to buy more soil n stuff...?

Id prefer crs and tb shrimp to be acclimatised to 7.4 ph so i could just use my tap water ....

In the low PH tank. I put them all (43 KK & 12 RW ) in there at 1 week old as test subjects and they are all

Thriving and happy as you can see in the vid.

The ph is sitting on 4.6 now and constant. Once the shrimp reach 10mm I will move them to

A tank with ph 5.8 for the next stage in there growth.

I find absolutely no problems with keeping any TB in tanks with ph range from 4.6-7.8

As long as the gh and EC are identical between tanks I can move shrimp around between different tanks/systems

Without problems.

Not for the faint hearted :) but nothing is ever learnt from doing the same thing as everyone else ;)

Thanks Dean, I am finding the ph of my benibachi tank is around 5 I stopped the meter before it stopped so it could be lower. Its still cycling so not worried as no shrimp in there yet but wondered how your shrimp had fared

I am curious about the effect of low PH to the growth of beneficial bacteria. I heard that bacteria will not grow at optimum rate under low ph example 5.

Anyone have the reference about it. Perhaps someone already made a study about it.

I don know of any references to studies but I was told by a guy who's somewhat of a genius in terms of water parameters that the bacteria start to die off at around 5ph, I know **** all about shrimp this conversation was regarding L numbers but I assume the same beneficial bacteria would eat the same crap

      Update to say that after a few gravel vacs, front wall scrub, moss / floating plant trim, that the condition seems to have improved.  My current theory is that it is due to waste / debris management, where "stuff" like that brown mulm accumulates in the substrate and behind the HMF filters.  Maybe some tanks can somehow deal with it, but mine can't.  Also another experienced shrimper suggested that maybe those "shell bugs" don't just live on the shrimps but also in this debris.  Maybe this is the reason some tanks fail due to "old tank syndrome" where all they need is a good gravel vac? Also, I am guessing that plant trim helps too because now more of the nutrients and light go into growing algae instead of more plants? Well anyway for this tank I will try weekly water change and monthly gravel vac / plant trim.  For my next tank, I'm thinking of something like an under-gravel system where this mulm can fall down and I vac it out.

      Good to have an update and good to hear you are getting shrimplets, so hopefully your colony will continue and you may not get to the point where you have to cull some to stop over population. These type of shrimp only live 12 - 18 months so the adult deaths may be natural? If you have the time I would do weekly 25% water changes, adding the new water via a drip system and do some vacuuming clean of the substrate each week, even if only a different bit each week! See if that helps in a few months and if it does then stick with that regime? It should help reduce any build-ups that may be occuring!

      Hello again, much belated update: The tank still has "cycles" of 1-2 month "good streaks" where everybody seems to be doing well, and then a bad streak where the short antenna problem shows up again, and a shrimp dies once every few days.  I am not sure what causes things to go bad, but usually over the course of a few days I will start to see more shrimp quietly standing on the HMF filter, and so I know something is wrong.  Since I am not "doing anything" besides the regular 1-2 week water changes, I just assume that something bad is building up.  Here's a list of things that I've tried that are supposed to be "can't hurt" but didn't prevent the problem either: Dose every other day with Shrimp Fit (very small dose, and the shrimp seem to like it) Sotching Oxydator Seachem Purigen to keep the nitrates lower Keeping the pH below 5.5 with peat Things that I don't do often, so could possibly "reset" the tank back to a good streak, are gravel vac and plant trim, so maybe time to try those again. One other problem I used to have was that sometimes a shrimp would suddenly stop eating with a full or partially full digestive tract that doesn't clear out, and then the shrimp will die within a few days.  I suspected it was one of the foods in my rotation - Shrimp Nature Infection, which contains a bunch of herbal plant things.  I've had this in my food rotation for a few years now and generally didn't seem to cause problems, but I removed it from the rotation anyway.  I don't have a lot of adult Golden Bees at this point so I can't really tell if it worked or not. Overall the tank is not too bad - during the good streaks occasionally a shrimp will get berried and hatch babies with a 33-50% survival rate.  So while there are fewer adults now, there are also a bunch of babies roaming around.  I guess this tank will stagger on, but I really do need to take the time to start up a new tank.  (or figure out the problem)

      If that is the offspring, then the parents are unlikely to be PRL. I tend to agree with you. There are very few PRLs in Australia. And any that claim to be needs to show proof. PRL genes have to start as PRL. CRS that breed true after x generations doesn't turn it into a PRL. Neither can a Taiwan bee shrimp turn into a PRL despite how ever many generations. I've never seen a PRL with that sort of red colour. I have on Red Wines and Red Shadows - Taiwan bee shrimps. So somewhere down the line one of your shrimp might have been mixed with Taiwan bees and is no longer PRL. It just tanks one shrimp to mess up the genes of a whole colony.

      Sorry, missed this one somehow! The PRL look fantastic and the odd ones look part PRL and part Red wine/Red shadow in the colour. They are still very beautiful but ideally should be seperated to help keep the PRL clean if you can do that.  Nice clear photos!
