Hey guys just curious, I have been doing a lot of reading about all your valuable info that all of you have written about and posted in this awesome forum, kinda on info overload right now, and I Didn't realise how naive I was on shrimp keeping/breeding I was till now.

So I was wondering what is the best advice you have been given about shrimp keeping/breeding?

Mine was being advised to join SKF.

What difficulties have you come across during your time involved in shrimp ?

My biggest hurdle was my husband whining about my taking over the garage with tanks, but that is why he is now my ex lol.

Deyeda, glad to hear you're stepping over/aside life's hurdles and driving towards the shrimp mecca....LOL

Best advise I've given is RO/Di Water ..... avoids so much confusion, explanation, and a great way to understand WP, WQ....etc

The biggest hurdle for me was orignially even finding cherry shrimp for sale locally, and then finding them online for sale but with lots of sellers not willing to post.

After that my biggest hurdle has been the heat up here and is ability to wipe out crystal reds- still one of my favourite shrimp because they look like candy canes.

Now my biggest hurdles is finding enough room for all the tanks I would love to have..... my car shed is getting a bit over run with tanks and tank equipment. And a reluctant hubby who is never keen to go shrimping with me. Personally I love going shrimping since its a lucky dip, you never know what you might find.

I have never thought about going shrimping before, till I read this forum, now I realise I have a lot of rivers and creeks to explore around The Central Coast (I know there are red yabbies in them) and there are also all the areas around my parents place at Bohena Creek up near Narrabri, there are the prettiest blue yabbies in the 12 dams on the property (we usually eat those). I am so looking forward to the school holidays now to get out there and see what I can find.

I am also finding out now, no one wants to post shrimp interstate.

best thing i have learnt and once again it works for me..lol... is i keep my water and the water look after my shrimp... I just try to keep it as stable as possible even if they are wrong ph, gh or kh.. if they are close enough they work for me...lol... I dont try to change anything if im close enough with in acceptable ranges as changing can cause issues... :) hope i make sense...lol

Where are you finding that?

Most of the members on this site are more than happy to ship and even if they don't have experience there is usually someone near by to help out.

With the use of kordon breather bags and correct packaging procedures even the most sensitive shrimp quite happily survive shipping.

The SKF code of conduct also says that DOA guarantees should be given to sell and ship :) gives you a nice piece of mind as a buyer.

Good to see your Crustacean fetish goes further than Shrimp (shrimp rule) and includes Crayfish now all I have to do is convert you to Crabs.

Its the best place for info on any thing you want.

Welcome to the forum Narelle :), Yes becareful some others go bbeyond shrimp aswell but they have crabs ;) lol

Best advice i been given is dont play with the water too much and buy a chiller :)

@Bob and Oz I have seen that bob has crabs, they are beautiful looking specimens, it's funny the first time I saw them was only a couple of days before joining SKF, I was looking at these pretty blue/purple/pink freshwater crabs, kinda wondering what they would be like to keep, then I spot that Bob has crabs and they are the same type lol

@Blindfisherman none of the guys on here have refused, it's when you find them in classifieds and things, even low grade CBS and CRS, people interstate refuse to ship them. I was trying to get some low grades to try and see if I can first keep them alive then get them breed. My cherries are flourishing, I am even getting some very dark reds. But I Would like to branch out a bit.

Guys where do you source your RO/DI water from?

as for ro it depends on your budget and housing situation but there is anything from $100 portable ones which you hook up to the sink when you need it or more expensive permanent installations giving you ro on demand. alternatively some lfs will sell ro water.

This is the RO system I bought, it brings the TDS down to about 20-40ppm & the second one is an add on DI stage that will bring the TDS down to about 5ppm, they are a great unit & very fast delivery :encouragement:

Lol RO/DI is what I have in my kitchen already, I have an Autistic daughter and need to filter all chemicals for drinking water and cooking for her, but I also use it in my tanks. No offence to any blondes but that was such a blonde moment not realising what you guys are talking about :redface-new:
