Back into fishkeeping and can't believe the variety of shrimp available now

Hi All,

Have come to SKF on the recommendation of one of the exisitng emmebrs who I purcahsed some CRS, yellows and cherries from recently - for my community tank.

I've been keeping fish for over 20 years in one form or another however have been out of the hobby for about 4 years due to moving house and other issues. Back then, the most extravagant shrimp you could get was glass shrimp. There was more and more attention building for Amano shrimp but you couldn't get them here. But now, getting back into the hobby, I'm bown away with the variety and colours available in the Australian market now. It's awesome.

So I'm in the process of setting up my first dedicated shrimp tank. The good thing is, I usually keep apisto's, so am used to low pH, soft water fish, which seems to be the best conditions for a lot of the shrimp too.

Very much looking forward to getting more into shrimp keeping.

Oh that was me. :)

I warned you about keeping your yellow cherries and crystal shrimp with your appisto when i sold them to you. And wow, i cant believe they are alive. Its good that you are setting up a dedicated shrimp tank as they will be better off in the long run.

Just remember not to mix your colours because they will interbreed and you will end up with undesired colours.

Any questions just ask. :)

Welcome kapp! Sounds like you will have no trouble setting up a nice home for your shrimp (away from hungry fishes :cower:)

Hi All,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Jonny, yep you definitely introduced me to CRS with the few I got off you, then I got another 30+ from a breeder in Queensland who mentioned he posted on here about his breeding efforts with blue shrimp, which I really wanted to read. And yeah, will definitely be keeping the different coloured shrimp separate. Am in the process of dividing my 2ft tank into three segments. Got the materials on the weekend and will work on the build this week. Got some plants coming in soon via mail so need to get moving.

Jonny and JohnH - I only had one apisto that developed a taste for the shrimp and unfortunately he died a week or two ago. The other two apistos and rams leave the shrimp alone. In fact they co-habitate very closely without issues. Very strange behaviour but I'm not complaining.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
