Breeeding shrimp in a breeder box

Hey SKF

I think i will be getting a pair of yellow cherry shrimp and i was wondering if i could keep them in one of those clear breeder boxs with some moss and stuff so they cant mix with my red? Would this also work for crs for selective breeding?

Are you talking about the 2L sattelite boxes?

Regular boxes have pretty big gaps that shrimplets can fit through with ease. I think the sattelite boxes are harder to escape from. Also, why not get another nano for just your yellows? Cherrys and CRS have different ideal params so this might be better?

also its fine if shrimplets can get out as long as the adults cant so they wont breed with the reds. Dont worry Loach there will be another tank:D

Well Dean used to sell them. Not sure if he still does. Otherwise, international ebay is your best bet.

Try Nolan he has a few spare satellite boxes I think. Breeding Rcs and crs is absolutely possible in the boxes but space is very limited. I'd say it's better to move the ones you want to breed into a seperate tank! And yes they can escape. Even the big ones. Don't know how sometimes. They can climb out of the smallest of gaps

They are fine for short term use but you are better off putting them in a dedicated tank if you don't want them to cross. I find that the internal floating ones develop water quality issues over time. The external ones that hang of the side of the tank are better as they use a air hose to circulate the water.

Breeder Box 1 - adult Sunkist Cherries

Breeder Box 2 - adult Brown Cherries

Satellite Box 3 - adult Blue Cherries

Satellite Box. 4 - adult Blue Rilli

Main Tank - Red Rilli and A/S Grade CRS

All berried females are transferred into the main tank (heavily planted...), and returned to their breeding/satellite box after releasing her eggs.....all shrimplets remain in the main tank to grow and mature ! A lot more work shuffling the shrimps etc, but part of the fun/hobby... as I don't have the luxury of having more tanks...etc

I have use the large saterlite external breeding box to select breed crs/cbs before but the shrimps look always stress. I have even loss a few in it. The best way to select breed is to use the internal breeding box. Works great. I think cherries should be fine, they are tough as nail.

Yes, breeding of cherries with this system/setup is OK....my yellow's have a dedicated tank, and breeding/success rate is no doubt better....however, I got 6 chocolate cherries in a 2 lt satellite box, and had 2 berried within 2-3 weeks...the most exciting thing about it, is I got 3 varieties of diff colored cherries out of the chocs ! My blue rillis got berried in the inteRnal breeder box too, so it's ok, just need to ensure the flow rate/water turnover is reasonable.
