I got my new 3 foot tank the other day and decided I want to set it up inbetween the kitchen and dining room up on the counter (its hard to explain what it looks like). The only thing is where it would be set up is right next to where my boyfriend sits at the table and smokes. A LOT. I'm not a smoker so I worry about what the "green" smoke (if you get my drift) might do to the water? The last thing I want to do is move my shrimp from the fishroom (which is smoke free) into this new tank and have them die because the smoke messes up the water.

I smoke cigarettes in my fish room (super proud of myself ;) ) and it doesn't seem to affect them fish or shrimp.. Not sure on other types of smoke? Maybe if they get real lazy and play X box too much and keep asking for packets of chips? Then ask your BF to take his hobby elsewhere..

Many of the chemicals in smoke dissolve readily into water. For example nicotine readily dissolves in water an can affect respiration(breathing) in fish.

Let me put it this way, do you immediately die from smoking a cigarrette (green or otherwise)? (No). Do you have a higher probability of dying younger from diseases such as cancer? (Yes)

Its the same for your animals. Yes smoking in you fishroom/near your tank may not immediately kill your shrimp, but that doesn't mean there aren't any effects. I potentially see reduced fecundity (ability to reproduce), reduced longevity, reduced immunity, reduced ability to handle stress ect ect. as long term consequences of such practice.

My advice is, don't do it. If you can't avoid it, then at least take some steps like adding carbon or polyfilter to your filtration to try and absorb those toxins from your water.

I have seen fish feed weed chopped up fine, boy they acted funny after for a while LOL.

:/ while not as bad as I thought I might hear, as I was more worried about somewhat immediate deaths, reading your comment makes me feel quilty for my fish in our two display tanks in the lounge and dining room :(Ill be honest, Im not going to go and change carbon in all the canisters every two weeks, so I might invest in some glass for the tops (would this help?) and look into some air filters of some sort...or I can just kick my boyfriend outside to smoke, that makes things much easier

Better still get him to quit! I have experienced this before from an ex gf... the best way is tell him that he'll be sleeping on the couch until he gives up the smokes whatever color it may be!!! I no longer have that habit...smoking I mean!

In all seriousness, thats probably going to be the cheapest and most effective method to reduce the risk of any problems. Adding glass tops probably won't do anything as anywhere air can go, smoke goes.
