Snow White VS Golden Shrimp. What's the difference?

Recommended Posts

sajica

I've gotten a few different answers from different people as to what the difference between the above shrimp are. Considering in the Shrimp Price Guide on the forum http://www.shrimpkeepersforum.com/forum/showthread.php/1815-Shrimp-Price-Guide

We have a fairly significant price difference. I'm hoping that someone who has kept them both can comment on the differences and how to tell them apart. Is there anything prospective buyers should be looking at/ for?

very simply put. golden is golden and snow white is completely white. not gold at all. in general the goldens don't had a very solid white colour and to me can look fairly Fugly. that's my 2 cents the non scientific way lol

I have them both, golden shrimp have a red tinge which makes them look goldish. Snow whites are all chalk white (body, head, legs). When young they may start out as chalk white color so you will think they are snows but as they grow they may get the golden look so unless buying from a respected breeder it is quite hard to differentiate when young. I have purchased a fair few thinking they were snows but turned out to be golds...

That's probably because the CBS had some red genes in them and CRS had black genes...

Golden red gene

Snowwhite black gene

That's the way I see it. Doesn't matter on its colour.

If its a gold colour and comes from cbs genetics, its a snow white- cull or low grade quality

Goldens bees can be even whiter than snow whites, but if they have CRS genetics, in my opinion from what I have read,

It is a Golden- CRS genetics.

How can goldens be whiter than original snow whites?

Hmmm...... I can see all of your points. Perhaps we need some referencing from overseas breeders to prove out points? I myself am not sure. Brb!!!

I've got 2 golden bees from CRS that are whiter than my snow whites from CBS. They come from a reputable breeder.

I keep them seperate from my snow whites because I know their genetics.

My point is they may be as white but not more white than proper snows can they?

I'm not sure what a proper snow white is...

From CBS, they will lose whiteness as they get older even if it is snow white in my experience.

I'm loading a video I just took of the goldens in my tank- they are just as solid white as the CRS. They come from the same genetics as the CRS.

I've turned off the 72 watt LED in the video so it doesn't over expose and white out the shrimp.

I'm not sure what a proper snow white is

I think Dean can answer that as he has talked about snow whites being sold which are just alright looking golds not proper snows.

Ive selectively bred SW/GB for 2+ years....not with great success, due to nitrate issues 6+ months ago, resulting in deaths !, and my culling hasn't been very stringent.... this thread has definitely sparked life to their selective breeding for me !...So Thanks !

I personally regard SW/GB as a quality/grading issue. Whether they're from CRS/CBS, IMHO, a true SW is completing colgate white, thick shell, white legs, and no/minimal shadow or markings on it's head. I'll take some pics of my stock later today. There's no mistaken when you see a true SW, as it just pops !, as it's white is vastly different to your GB.

Bluey and dean and many others! while you are there can you tell me your survival rates for goldens and snow whites? I've noticed that there hasn't been a specialist gb/sw breeder with massive numbers of them

Hey guys, I noticed a couple of days ago that one of my female rocket killies has some sort of disease or injury on her side, and I have no experience with fish diseases at all, so can I get some help with working out what it is and what to do about it? One of my female endlers also has a little white line on the end of her tail, and I just noticed this as well. Please help me with identifying the problems and fixing them. Photos are here: https://postimg.cc/gallery/odz029e0/ Cheers, Crabclaw

Turned into a ghost town in here, lol.   PH is down to 5.9-6.0 for some reason. All I’ve changed is the Rock was removed and a few small almond leaves added. I know those can bring the PH down a hair. Any idea what might be causing the issue? I was planning on keeping Some Jade Neos, I don’t know that they would like 5.9-6.0 very well. Thoughts?   I’m struggling here and I don’t know wtf to do. I’d love is someone could help me out here.

Update for anyone interested.Rock was removed, Ph and TDS is down, over the last few days it’s crept down to around 190TDs after small water changes. Something that want happening with even larger changes before. PH seems to be down around 6.5. I hope it stays at that level, all inhabitants look to be doing well.

IME, the healthiest and highest quality has always buying directly from hobbyist, usually a small setup in their garage or fish room. Next was specialty store/importer, last is the local TFS, both often having stock that has been imported, transported and kept in less than ideal conditions... Buying directly from hobbyist has always produced the best results for me...

Did boil a few times, the water wasn’t completely clear when I stopped cleaning it. So they should be getting some tannins. I was able to remove all but one rock, I have one more piece to put in in its plAce today.   Right on. I’m originally from Ohio, and I’ve been scoping out Flip’s videos and website for a few weeks now. Looks like I’ll be ordering from either Flip or AquaHuna after I get this tank works out completely.   TDS is already down slightly after removing the rock and doing a small water change. I also took the opportunity to remove some plants I wasn’t a fan of and replace them. Indian Almond Leaves came in today too, but my BacterAE is delayed. Thanks Amazon.🙄🙄
