Line Breeding Native Shrimp

Only has tannin at very low flow about once every 2 or 3 years, PH is usually around 7 to 7.2 because of the flow from the mountain and 0s for most of the time for KH and GH.

But very clean and dam good to drink. No other Caridina shrimp any where near them for most of there range.

I think that is where most people might be coming undone cross infection? but they absolutely hate POOR water conditions= lack of water changes.

Ok so I was wrong on the acidic part but the point is still valid. Low KH and GH values would also mean low TDS values... I.e. it means the water is very clean/pure, which means a low bacterial count.

You mentioned leaves in another thread Bob in regards to keeping zebs happy and healthy. What leaves naturally occur in their habitats? I would assume eucalypts?

All sorts of Rain forest leaves in the creek with them and the little ones like to be near the leaves, the adults will be all over the place . You are spot on about the low bacteria count, any thing you get from a clean creek will be OK, I use IAL, Mango, Banana, Mulberry, Ice cream bean and some leaves from local creeks and feed little amounts of various food 3 times a week. I also keep up the water changes but I have just about rain water from the tap.

There is nothing better when you have time than to sit or lay in the water with a mask on and see what they are doing. They will crawl all over you and on your mask to.

Wow dude, that must be so awesome! I love scuba diving for the interaction with the sealife but that must be amazing to experience :encouragement:

I will sit Wayne in the creek when he gets here next month and see if they like him LOL.

Wayne is also going to do some stories for the forum about his trip up here

  • 1 month later...

There are still vast areas of Arnhem Land and the Kimberley yet to be explored for aquarium suitable shrimps. The Scientists from ERISS get one new species of shrimp in each creek that drops off the Arnhem land escarpment, when they tried to go back the Aboriginal Traditional owners would not let them because white men disturb the spirits. The new species from Gunlom looks OK but I cant get any yet. There is vast areas of east Arnhem Land where it is not possible to get into, there is reports of colourful shrimps in Leichardtt Springs but Yvonne Margarula wont let anyone in there, she is the traditional owner of the area.

There is a new species of Caridina in the Moyle River but it is not too colourful. The new Icthyologist at the NT Museum found two new species of fish at Maningrida last year. A goby and a feshwater sole. He is not looking for shrimps.

Attached is a picture of Gunlom and the shrimp. The people at Gunlom are the Traditional Owner and Gilbert Maebe one of Northboy's mates.

The Gunlom Shrimp may be OK for a line breeding experiment, they have nice pattern. I will work on getting permission to fiash there again. It was about ten years ago that I got the rainbowfish from there and put it into the hobby, that is when I photographed the shrimps.

Cheers

Dave
