Thanks for having me along to the forum. Looking forward to seeing all your shrimp paradises and learning all the tips and tricks for quality cbs breeding before moving into keeping high end shrimp.

At the moment I'm breeding chameleon (ninja) shrimp, painted red cherries and having a crack at breeding ottos. I've quite a few fish tanks and plans to expand with a shrimp tank rack in the process of being built. I'll whack up a tank journal as it all comes together.

Peace, Megaebi. :encouragement:

Just for 100% transparency. I'm edk911 from the other forum and from ************ I used a different name here so I could join without causing problems but since the admins are now aware its probably best that everyone else is too.

I'm not here to cause any problems, spy, steal content or sow discord. I'm politicly neutral and everyone should feel free to keep an eye on me to make sure I'm well behaved here. I'm not here to be involved in or cause any animosity, I'm simply a MASSIVE MASSIVE shrimp enthusiast and want to the chance to learn, share and be part all the shrimp communities here in AU. I'm all about the hobby and helping others to join, learn and get involved.

Thanks for reading and I hope we can all be friends and allies in making this hobby as popular in australia as it is in many other countries.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Can't wait to get stuck in to my tank rack and post up a journal. I've just come back from bunnings with the shelving unit I'll be using and if the missus wasn't getting back @3 I'd be starting on assembly right now :) In the meantime heres the first 2 of the tanks and the sump that will form the start of this system.

No doubt you'll find the members of SKF, and the forum extremely informative, and a great community.

Building a tank rack is always exciting and fun, and look forward to updates.... What shrimps are you planning for these tanks ?

As a start I'll be selecting the best pairs from my tanks to set up breeding the below

tank1 compartment1 - CBS A-S

tank1 compartment2 - YCS

tank2 compartment1 - CRS A-S

tank2 compartment2 - Red Rili

tank3 display tank YCS, CBS, Chameleon, DRNS & DAE with loads of plants.

Once I'm happy with the system I'll add more tanks.

Sounds great. The YCS in tank3 won't X with those other shrimps listed, so really it's a selective breeding tank for the YCS...which theoriticaly means that your tank1 compartment 2 is FREE for another variant....unless of course you have other plans ? ...just a thought and suggestion....

True, perhaps I should go for Black cherries or Chocolates in there.

Don't CRS, and Tee bees breed better by themselves?

I've read that cherries will out compete and out breed the other shrimp species and slow the success of CRS, tee bees, etc.

I've got my first compartment devoted to yellow cherries, and am thinking about another species after I am successful with crystal shrimp.

BTW. Hi Ben. =)

The out-breeding of a shrimp species by another in a mixed tank is only a problem in a tank that is not managed well.

If you are running selective breeding tanks, then in theory you will be culling and keeping only the best shrimp

to further improve the lines. TB are slow breeders and should be kept to a tank by them selves anyway.

cherries do breed much faster than crystals but if your breeding for quality and not quantity it shouldn't be a problem.

running individual tanks for each species if you have the tanks is always a better way to go though :)

I'm a breeder of TB/Tiger's and a collector of cherries. All my tanks are focused on selectively breeding the TB's/Tiger's, BUT each tank has a cherry variant. I ensure the cherry population remain's >20, and selectively cull them.

Commercial breeders looking to maximise breeding potential & shrimplet survival will no doubt have them individually housed, but that's not for me.....

They do co-exist really well, and never noticed any real aggression between the species, except for the occasional squabble over food, but that's natural and happens within the same species.

I'm already skating on very thin ice with keeping my tanks at my girlfriends apartment. I've told her the day I get my house I'll have my own shrimproom/ man-cave and she will never see me again. =)

I hear ya JonX. I pitch this rack as a way to combine and downsize the area of space this hobby takes up in order to get permission ;)

Here's a closer pic of the tank design and a quick question to get input. Should I remove the weir and just use a standing pipe drain ? I can see big problems trying to shrimp-proof the overflow into the weir.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
