Loving the natives...

Hi all,

I never used to give shrimp a second glance at the LFS but since getting into planted aquariums, I've discovered the Super (Algae Eating) Powers of our native shrimp.

I previously purchased some Longnose and Confusa to help clean up my planted/breeding/mess of a tank.

I then found some DAS and DRNS for my planted IQ5 tank. With the way that I've scaped the tank, there's not enough room for fish so I will definitely be looking for some more common, colourful (non-native) species. I've also just discovered the "Australian Amano Shrimp" (Cardina Typus) - want!

Cheers,

Kaltses

Welcome to the best forum and the only one for Shrimp

You had better give me a yell then. FNQ is the home of natives so there for you are on the right forum.

Welcome! You have come to the right place! Bob is pretty incredible with his native knowledge.

Im a big fan of Australian shrimp too, not just for the algae eating, they look amazing too! Only got chameleons and DAS at the moment, but the chameleons never cease to amaze with their colours.

I must have the bug...

I now own 2 chameleons and another DRNS and DAS.

Almost had a Wilkensii too but the bugger went into hiding when the net went in.

Welcome to the forum, and its not so much a bug with shrimp but an addiction ;). Personally I am torn between the amazng colours becoming available in the exotic shrimp and the simple colours and diverstiy in our home grown natives.

Typus shrimp can get some pretty interesting colours too, I have one female that hides all day in a hollow log but when she comes out she has a blue/ grey tinge to her body. If she wasn't so fast I would get some pictures of her, but the shed or tank lights come on and she scarpers.

And Bob is definantly your man for introducing you to our wonderful natives....fish and snails and of course shrimp.

As I have over flowing ponds I am about to put up a Native shrimp offer, with 4 species and a bonus 5th.

Over flowing ponds = shrimp swimming in the grass in my back yard LOL.

Is there no way to get a preview of what's on offer?

I don't think I'll be in a sitatuation to sell anything, any time soon.

It'll cost you $12.50 for premium membership and $100's for all the shrimp you'll subsequently spend your money on :p

Well, you don't have to be selling, if you buy shrimp from your LFS and instead start buying them from here, you will save that money in no time. There are also some very generous members who offer free shrimp from time to time.

Once you get a few posts up you can view most of the forum, get an idea of what shrimp people have, but there is no way to see what is for sale until you subscribe. SKF is an amazing forum either way, but with the subscription it really does open many doors.

Yes I was a bit sceptical too, saying "what! I have to pay for subscription to a forum?" But once I did, never regretted it for a second. Now I know what is on offer, I would have paid much more!

Went away on the weekend and didn't get a chance to transfer them into my nano again.

House got too hot and so did the water where the shrimp were in

A common mistake...we live & learn. I returned on hols and several of my CRS tanks were 28-29 degrees too...my chillers were not handling the heat as the temp was 42 degrees for 5-6 days ! The ambient temperature was just too hot....gotta save up for a AC unit for next summer.

Bob, are zebra shrimps available for purchase ? Thought of giving it another go.
