substrates and aquascaping.

Out of curiosity i was wondering do people change their substrate every two years or so if they also have ground cover?i currently have aqua sand in my tank but was wondering if i wanted to do ground cover would it mean i would not need to change the substrate.i was told aquasand or aqua soil needs to be replaced once it starts breaking down

i use aquasoil.. and i replace once it stops buffering the water.. it can vary depending on the bag you bought..as ive seen different results from different bags.. ie; not all bags of soil are exactly the same..

not a stupid question.... im interested in this as i have ground cover and a good easy way would make life easy...lol...
