min size for snow white shrimp purchases

Hi there guys, just wondering at what minimum size would you purchase snow white shrimp. The reason I ask is I obtained some at 3-4mm but half have not managed to survive:sorrow:. I have them in a breeder box in an established Cbs tank so I can keep an eye on them, hope the others will make it as it pains me when I see them on their side at bottom on substrate.

The general consensus for shrimp purchases is 0.8-10mm minimum

Sorry to hear about your losses. They're next on my hit list

Thats too small/young from my point of view. When selling/buying shrimps it should at least be around 0.8cm to 1cm.

thanks for the replies guys, Yes that is what I thought, too young but I thought if transferred and acclimated properly they'll be ok. I guess I was too eager to get them. Another learning experience of many since I joined the shrimp hobby... Most problems come from impatience or over eagerness from what I have learnt.

Sorry to hear about your negative experience....there's a thread discussing these issues now. As a new hobbyist, the seller (i.e. more experience shrimp breeder) should not have sold this to you, and/or advise you of the issues of purchasing/transferring 3-4mm shrimplets. So please don't think it's your fault.

Acclimatisation, depending on the change of WP from sellers tank & yours, can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to a day, with the drip method.

I purchased 4 x female Deep Red cherries 6+ months ago, and when I received them, they were all female, BUT were 20-25mm, and were too old to do much ! Within 2-3 weeks, they all died of old age......I voiced my issues with the seller, whom ignored the complaints......ironically, he now owns/is involved on the other forum...WTF !

Yeah mate the seller should not have done that. But then again we don't have the whole story. I have been convinced by buyers to sell shrimp to them at 5mm as they were too eager and I did with no losses. Either way though I now realise the stupidity in that from me so lesson learnt. Have you voiced your experience with the seller?

I really am to blame, the seller did advise against this but as said earlier I was too eager so its my own fault. I acclimated them for over an hr. They were fine for first 2 days but then started dropping, anyway I now know better. Even shrimplets left in tank they were born in don't all make it right, I don't know why I thought they would be good even though I knew they were too small.

the other thing to remember is that there are A LOT of people claiming to have snow whites for sale!!! that are nothing more than ok looking goldens.

also most shrimp look great when they are that small and you wont see there true colors until they are at least 10-15 mm depending on type of shrimp..

sorry for your loss mate..

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
