CRS Breeding

Hi All,

I've had my CRS tank up and running for almost a year now and i've had a few berried shrimp over that time.

I never done any water changes but only top ups. The TDS stayed under control but feel like i need to start doing some water changes. I am looking to do a water change of 10l every 2 weeks with a top up of RO water in the middle . would this be enough ? It's a 60l tank. The water is dripped in through a 6mm hose. 

Will this help with breeding? I'm from Scotland so we are currently in winter and have heard that breeding declines in the winter,

It may help with breeding as it does tend to encourage moulting etc. It would be advisable to change the water as planned anyway for the general health of the whole tank so I would encourage that! As you say though, it may take a while as we are mid winter and many people experience slower/no breeding in that time, not everyone though.

An initial large water change of 50% is probably required to get rid of as much built up waste as possible.

Then drip back in the water matched to ideal parameters for your shrimp.

You can maintain it thereafter with a 3L (5%) to 6L (10%) fortnightly water change - depending on TDS readings. Even if they don't breed over winter, the regular water changes can't do any harm.
