Shrimp tank cycling

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm cycling a tank ATM and I'm using Dr Tim's ammonia, stability and I do have prime.

But I was wondering if prime would stall the cycle since the bacteria need ammonia to feed and prime turns it into a.non toxic form?

My ammonia's been pretty high for the past week and I've been trying to do a partial water change to keep the levels down, not going down, no nitrites. But I did just start cycling it last week.

If not prime,  you will have to use another de-chlorinator, as chlorine  will kill the bacteria. It might still cycle with prime,  but maybe a bit longer. Do you have access to one that doesn't bind ammonia?

No need to change the water  until you see ph drop below 6.5.

I'm considering water changing because I read that too high of an ammonia reading will also stall the cycle. I only have prime but I was reading conflicting results on if it stalls the cycle by not letting the bb feed. 🤔

Are you using a plant substrate like ADA Amazonia?

If you are not, than ammonia won't get high enough to stall a cycle.

Just don't use too much Prime. Only enough to treat the amount of tap water being added. That should minimise any impact that it might have to bind ammonia.

Very nice tank set up, lush and green! The ember tetras look great in it as well. It is good to hear it is all going well and maybe the shrimp are slowing breeding as it is winter where you are so don't panic, hopefully the berried shrimp will give you a few shrimplets to watch soon! Simon

Following this build. Looks cool Sub.  Sucks about your bad experience with the supplier. There is nothing worse than poor service.  Which State are you in?

Been a while since I posted as the forum was busted and I couldn't log in for ages. I hope everyone's well. I set up a new ADA Mini M for the CRS last month. It's still cycling. Plants are growing in nicely and I've ordered an Oase FiltosSmart 100 with the integrated heater for it. Ive always used Eheims with an inline heater and I can't wait to try the Oase out. My cube is growing well too. The Cherry shrimp in there are breeding prolifically which makes for challenging water changes as I try not to suck shrimplets out. I put 10 CRS culls in there the other day and I'll be interested to see how they fair.  The CRS took a long hiatus from breeding recently. I was worried my water quality had gone to poo. Spotted a female carrying the other day so all's good in the world.
