Fresh Dandylion Leaves?

Has anyone tried picking some fresh Dandylion Leaves, blanching them and feeding them to there shrimp like fresh picked Mullberry leaves? I'm about to do just that in a cull tank. I will update with results. I grow Stinging Nettle and collard Greens and Mullberrys specifically to do this but never tried Dandylion.

the dandelion flowers ... yes. But not the leaves.

Only because I don't find dandelion leaves regularly enough.

You can do the weeding in the backyard, as well as forage for shrimp food.

Win - Win.

I think some of the commercially produced foods have dandelion in them. As you say just blanch them and off you go but ONLY if they have never been anywhere near weedkiller or any other chemical sprayer.

I will be interested to hear how the shrimps like it?

It's going to be just like any other leafy green at the end of the day. If you already feed mulberry leaves, the shrimp won't get anything extra from dandelion leaves.

Feed the flower on the other hand ... that's a whole bunch of different minerals the shrimp will get, including carotenoids which can assist in colouring up shrimps.

Read my write up on feeding "Edible Flowers for Shrimps". It's fallen off the first page in the Food & Nutrition forum. Maybe I should pin it.

I would never have thought about the flowers. Obviously most gardeners know dandelions are pretty abundant so it is good to make use of this pest (not the root I assume) if you can find another useage. Not roadside ones though as they will probably be polluted by the vehicles etc.

Absolutely try flowers. Don't even need to blanch them. As long as you know they are clean of pesticides, it can go straight into the tank.

I've fed roses, hibiscus, nasturtiums, dandelions (those are the ones I have in my garden). The shrimps love them and they colour up nicely after a few feeds. The colour is not permanent however, just a caveat.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
