It seems my tanks is ok now, my DIY chiller has been tested and work, temperature has been maintained at 25-27 degree celcius, the above photo is my current tank and the chiller, combine a aquarium water chiller and a PC water cooler in one.

That's quite a setup you have there! I am glad to hear that it is all going well at the moment. Have you had some extreme hot weather since setting up the cooler to see if it will work during really hot spells? Do you know how many shrimps you have in the tank now?

I have my shrimp tank to do tomorrow! I am still not sure how it is going at this stage though the nitrates have reduced, but won't rush into getting any more shrimps yet, the ones I want are out of stock anyway, thankfully..........

Yep its been hot recently, about 29-35 degree celcius, most of my shrimps died before I got the new DIY chiller, but the new chiller is working great now, temperature of the water now is maintained at 25-26, Previous I have been turning my A/C on time to time when I see the water temperature reach about 28-29 degree celcius with the old chiller. Now the new chiller is working good with no support from the A/C.

THAT'S GREAT NEWS and should make everyones life a lot calmer in the heat! Any idea how many shrimps are in the tank now?

I would say 'room for some new shrimps' but it is probably best to hold off until after the trip to Taiwan at this point. Something to look forward too when you get back and see how the tanks did whilst you are/were away?

Haven't been posting lately, but have been keep tabs in the forum, my tank is doing well, its been little under a month since I added some shrimp, another 20 CRS and 5 RED Wine to those existing shrimps that is already in the tank, only had 4 dead shrimps. The cooler is doing well, I will take photo in a few days and post.

Always good to have an update and it seems to be going well now! I hope the ones that died weren't the wine reds? Great to hear the cooler is working - I plan to get one over the winter (ready for next year) if all goes well with the tank a bit longer.

We have had a week of 30ish degree heat here (record breaking bank holiday weather for here) but I think my shrimp have been fine as the max temperature was 26 in the tank (that was yesterday) so within the same range as yours have been keeping. The hot spell has now gone thankfully. I think I have about 50% survival of the initial shrimps I got and as the tank has not been co-operating from day 1 I can accept that and may get some new stock soon as it now seems pretty steady? Got that tank to do maintenance/water change tomorrow.

Those that died was the CRS, I have 6 Red Wines now, I still get a room temp of about 30-31, my turtle water is at 30, but turtles are ok with various temp, my shrimp tank is at about 25.6 with a backup cooler if the temp goes over 27.

I might just get a last batch of 20 CRS and 5 Red Wine just before I go on my holiday, and see the results when I get back on holiday, I will keep an eye on my web camera, and if the temp starts going up I will turn on the A/C, I can turn on and off my A/C with my phone anywhere.

It is way too easy to get carried away with this hobby as we all know, especially when all is going well! I would hold of getting any more shrimp until you get back as you don't know what may happen when you're not there to sort it all out if need be. Unless they are very young shrimp that you have they will also breed quickly enough once they get started  so I would hold off getting any more until you return, and you will have the prospect of getting more to look forward too when you return?

Good to hear the red wines are doing well.

Nice photos, I especially like the 3 red wines and the shed shells in the last picture. You sure keep a clean tank! Thats a lot of wires and equipment?

Its more a bark wood tied with moss, tried many moss, this one is slow growing and has looks nice since I used it, two temperature controller with a water cooler, one it the main cooler, the other is a backup, one is set to 25, the other is set to 27, and a individual thermometer, other wires is at the back of the tank connected to the DIY cooler, I forget to add a background PVC film like the old tank.

It seems like my shrimps are growing fast everyday, it seem lots of skin are been shreaded, is it normal. Also a few of my older shrimps are always fighting, are shrimps terrestrial.

I'm sure shrimp aren't territorial. Usually in the past I have only seen them 'squabble' over food which is why I smash the pellets up so it can be spread around in the tank.

Usually a change of water will encourage moulting so any new shrimps will probably moult soon after being put in the tank! Younger shrimps moult more often than adults as they are growing quicker. I almost always see discarded shells (some people call them ghosts which I like) after my maintenance and water change!

Have you managed to resist the urge to get more shrimps yet? I ordered 10 blue bolts for sometime this week................

I haven't got any new shrimps yet.

the larger shrimps are fighting at the corner hiding spot, not for food, I also mush the food up into powder.

Update on my shrimp tank, all my shrimps died last week, my tubing on the cooler came off, and the cooler was running dry, heating the shrimp tank upto 45 degree celcius, the tube came off the pump as the hot water melted pump in/outlet. I have now used a pump with metal in/outlet.

Right now I have 22 micro thai crabs and 3 Red Wine. the few days the Red Wine was kind of scared of the crabs, and always at the top part of the tank, now its ok, the shrimps are back at the bottom.

Very sorry to hear about the tank overheating and wiping out your shrimps! Can you get a 2 plug adapter and have the heater and cooler plugged into that overheating safety device as extra security? I now what happened is probably just a freaky thing (who would expect a cooler to heat the water?) that probably won't happen again but you won't be happy with loosing the crabs????

Hopefully the shrimps will be ok with the micro crabs (beautiful red wine in the picture)?

Most of the stringy algae has gone in my shrimp tank so I will do maintenance tomorrow, tests at the weekend and if all is ok I will order the (final) red shrimps next week.

Thumbs up for perseverance!

It normal for.the heat to go back to the tank, the copper block is suppose to absorb the heat and take it hot water to the radiator with the fan to cool the heat, since the tube came off, the heat goes back to the block which is suppose to carry the cool water to the tank.

I am trying to work out/understand whether the controller, if using an adaptor so the heater AND cooler were plugged in to it, that would have stopped the overheating by disconnecting the power to the cooler, (and the heater) or am I missing something as I don't use a controller (or a cooler, yet). The tank may then still have overheated if it was a really hot day though! It may be one of those, in theory it works but practice not?

I will probably get some sort of cooler for next summer but probably just get the fan set that attaches to the top of the tank for the few days it may be needed!

No that's not normal. But I don't know which tube in your loop had come off. Can you show us?

Yes that would have helped a bit, and at least give KMS more time to have found the issue by turning off the chiller.

As I understand, kms has a peltier style chiller, and a tube of the pump had come off, which meant that hot water from the hot side of the peltier flowed back into the tank. So if the chiller was on the same temp controller, it would have turned off the chiller at around 26degC. The tank might have got warmer in his room, but it would have been at a much slower rate, and certainly would not have reached 45degC.

Update to say that after a few gravel vacs, front wall scrub, moss / floating plant trim, that the condition seems to have improved.  My current theory is that it is due to waste / debris management, where "stuff" like that brown mulm accumulates in the substrate and behind the HMF filters.  Maybe some tanks can somehow deal with it, but mine can't.  Also another experienced shrimper suggested that maybe those "shell bugs" don't just live on the shrimps but also in this debris.  Maybe this is the reason some tanks fail due to "old tank syndrome" where all they need is a good gravel vac? Also, I am guessing that plant trim helps too because now more of the nutrients and light go into growing algae instead of more plants? Well anyway for this tank I will try weekly water change and monthly gravel vac / plant trim.  For my next tank, I'm thinking of something like an under-gravel system where this mulm can fall down and I vac it out.

Good to have an update and good to hear you are getting shrimplets, so hopefully your colony will continue and you may not get to the point where you have to cull some to stop over population. These type of shrimp only live 12 - 18 months so the adult deaths may be natural? If you have the time I would do weekly 25% water changes, adding the new water via a drip system and do some vacuuming clean of the substrate each week, even if only a different bit each week! See if that helps in a few months and if it does then stick with that regime? It should help reduce any build-ups that may be occuring!

Hello again, much belated update: The tank still has "cycles" of 1-2 month "good streaks" where everybody seems to be doing well, and then a bad streak where the short antenna problem shows up again, and a shrimp dies once every few days.  I am not sure what causes things to go bad, but usually over the course of a few days I will start to see more shrimp quietly standing on the HMF filter, and so I know something is wrong.  Since I am not "doing anything" besides the regular 1-2 week water changes, I just assume that something bad is building up.  Here's a list of things that I've tried that are supposed to be "can't hurt" but didn't prevent the problem either: Dose every other day with Shrimp Fit (very small dose, and the shrimp seem to like it) Sotching Oxydator Seachem Purigen to keep the nitrates lower Keeping the pH below 5.5 with peat Things that I don't do often, so could possibly "reset" the tank back to a good streak, are gravel vac and plant trim, so maybe time to try those again. One other problem I used to have was that sometimes a shrimp would suddenly stop eating with a full or partially full digestive tract that doesn't clear out, and then the shrimp will die within a few days.  I suspected it was one of the foods in my rotation - Shrimp Nature Infection, which contains a bunch of herbal plant things.  I've had this in my food rotation for a few years now and generally didn't seem to cause problems, but I removed it from the rotation anyway.  I don't have a lot of adult Golden Bees at this point so I can't really tell if it worked or not. Overall the tank is not too bad - during the good streaks occasionally a shrimp will get berried and hatch babies with a 33-50% survival rate.  So while there are fewer adults now, there are also a bunch of babies roaming around.  I guess this tank will stagger on, but I really do need to take the time to start up a new tank.  (or figure out the problem)

If that is the offspring, then the parents are unlikely to be PRL. I tend to agree with you. There are very few PRLs in Australia. And any that claim to be needs to show proof. PRL genes have to start as PRL. CRS that breed true after x generations doesn't turn it into a PRL. Neither can a Taiwan bee shrimp turn into a PRL despite how ever many generations. I've never seen a PRL with that sort of red colour. I have on Red Wines and Red Shadows - Taiwan bee shrimps. So somewhere down the line one of your shrimp might have been mixed with Taiwan bees and is no longer PRL. It just tanks one shrimp to mess up the genes of a whole colony.
    • sdlTBfanUK
Sorry, missed this one somehow! The PRL look fantastic and the odd ones look part PRL and part Red wine/Red shadow in the colour. They are still very beautiful but ideally should be seperated to help keep the PRL clean if you can do that.  Nice clear photos!
