Thanks, the shrimp is in a local shop, it's the first I seen in Hong Kong.

Do you know what variation is this.

Just one question, I see a shrimp I'd like local, but not sure what it is, it looks like a Mosura crown with a pinkish, orange white body, the patch is like a orange colour, do you know what shrimp it is.

The only one I can think of is the orange rili,

Or it maybe a golden bee?

Those are ALL things I buy, there will be a small packet of snowflake in the 5 in 1.  I don't know whether you can amend the order at this stage but they do have these snowflakes which I use, just a different brand (the same as is in 5 in 1) to the one you wanted, but you may well put through another order in the future.

They are super efficient so it may be too late already anyway?

That makes sense. I smash the 5 in 1 food with a hammer before opening each packet and then I tip them into a pot so they get a mix each day. A whole stick will probably be too much for your number of shrimps I think anyway. I then wet the flat end of an old shrimp lolly in the tank to 1-2mm and dip it in the mix and swish that in the tank, so they get a mix and it is spread around the tank so they don't have to fight over it. It should last quite a long time, I a still on my first pack of 5 in 1 mixed and that is nearly a year ago (though I only use it 2 days a week as I alternate with others), plus you are less likely to overfeed the shrimps which is very easy and common thing to do. Also, I use a lolly once a week but that is all the shrimps get that day, and I think they recommend a lolly for 30 shrimps, so you should probably just use half of one each time, as I used to when I had less shrimps! Even now with over 100 shrimps they only get the one lolly! I don't know whether you noticed but there is a mixed set of different lollies, which is the set I get.

Hope this all helps. I am still getting over the shock that you already got a shrimp I haven't heard of before today! Wow!

Simon

ps I may not be online tomorrow as we are having a powercut here for the day, so if you do post something don't think I am ignoring it if it takes a long time to reply!

You are saying, you don't have the ghost bee.

Yeh, the lollies, I realised I got the mixed packet.

I have contacted them but not received a reply to add two pack of of snowflakes, should I just cancel those.

I have just called them and left a message for him to call me so if he does before it is sent  I'll see if he can change the order. He doesn't answer when I call as my number is private!

I hadn't even known the ghost bee existed before I looked on that website?

The lollies you ordered are all artemia I think fro what you sent?

The 5 in 1 are only small packets so there is no reason to not get those and a tub extra of the snowflake, which is what I do.

I copied this from my PC, but my PC won't allow me to make the purchase, it's a company PC with intranet network, and many restriction, So I have to do it on my mobile phone, it's the mixed lolly that I purchased.

I also feed my shrimps with guppy food and Shirakura shrimps pellet.

D'oh! Suddenly remembered it is a bank holiday here............... I don't work so it is a normal day for me, but the shop will be closed so the order won't get dealt with today anyway. Can you go back in to the site and amend the order?

I feed chi-ebi which I think is shirakua, but as I say I alternate day to day, I got the chi ebi mainly as it was recommended for baby shrimps. You won't need the guppy food any more as you will have plenty of proper shrimp foods that have everything that is good for them.

You may not get very far with ProShrimp today, because it is a Bank holiday here so I doubt he is at the business premises today.

I may be able to get hold of him in the morning, and will try, depending on when they cut our power off!

Ok, thanks for the update! I guess the modern phones mean it is easier to do these things these days even when you're not at work, but I am not of that generation. Anyway sounds like you are all sorted and it worked in your favour it being a bank holiday over here today as normally it would already have been posted.

Just to get back to the original subject to this thread, I retested the Z|EROWATER today after the filter has been used for 94L of tapwater (TDS171, GH5, KH3, PH7.5) as I wanted to check all was still working as well as when the filter was new.

TDS 000

GH 0-1

KH 0-1

PH 5.5-6

These figures are the same as when the filter was new. Admittedly it is PROBABLY near time when it will need to be changed (about 100-110L for my water).

Just to let you know, I have received both package today, I also noticed that zerowater 20 cup I purchased was priced wrong, I got  it for GBP 19 with coupon GBP 5 discount, making it GBP14, apparently the price with up the next day from GBP 19 to GBP 26.99.

It would still have been a bargain at the full price, so you did really well. The length that the filter lasts will depend on the TDS of your water but I think yours is a lot less than ours is in the UK. My TDS 170 does about 100L so if your TDS is half ours then it should do 200L?

I'm impressed the stuff from UK has arrived already! It may be worth considering that for future stuff?

There won't be any purchased from pro shrimp any time soon, the amount I purchased will last me a long time.

I agree it should last a long time. Don't forget to mash up the 5 in 1 with a hammer BEFORE opening the packets as it is much easier and cleaner to do it that way than trying to do it once the packets are opened! If the 2 snowflake bottles are only about half full I would put both those in the one tub and use the other tub to empty the 5 in 1 into and mix/store it in it!

The mineral fluid double is super easy to use but needs a thorough shaking each time you use it to get a consistent reading.

Thanks for the tip.

I have a question about the zerowater filter, is that a little hole at the bottom, or do I have to make a hole.

I assume that is where the water comes out once filtered. As it is such a thorough filter it comes through quite slowly, much slower than say a brita. I have never had to do anything other than just screw the filter in! Hope this answers the query?

Update to say that after a few gravel vacs, front wall scrub, moss / floating plant trim, that the condition seems to have improved.  My current theory is that it is due to waste / debris management, where "stuff" like that brown mulm accumulates in the substrate and behind the HMF filters.  Maybe some tanks can somehow deal with it, but mine can't.  Also another experienced shrimper suggested that maybe those "shell bugs" don't just live on the shrimps but also in this debris.  Maybe this is the reason some tanks fail due to "old tank syndrome" where all they need is a good gravel vac? Also, I am guessing that plant trim helps too because now more of the nutrients and light go into growing algae instead of more plants? Well anyway for this tank I will try weekly water change and monthly gravel vac / plant trim.  For my next tank, I'm thinking of something like an under-gravel system where this mulm can fall down and I vac it out.

Good to have an update and good to hear you are getting shrimplets, so hopefully your colony will continue and you may not get to the point where you have to cull some to stop over population. These type of shrimp only live 12 - 18 months so the adult deaths may be natural? If you have the time I would do weekly 25% water changes, adding the new water via a drip system and do some vacuuming clean of the substrate each week, even if only a different bit each week! See if that helps in a few months and if it does then stick with that regime? It should help reduce any build-ups that may be occuring!

Hello again, much belated update: The tank still has "cycles" of 1-2 month "good streaks" where everybody seems to be doing well, and then a bad streak where the short antenna problem shows up again, and a shrimp dies once every few days.  I am not sure what causes things to go bad, but usually over the course of a few days I will start to see more shrimp quietly standing on the HMF filter, and so I know something is wrong.  Since I am not "doing anything" besides the regular 1-2 week water changes, I just assume that something bad is building up.  Here's a list of things that I've tried that are supposed to be "can't hurt" but didn't prevent the problem either: Dose every other day with Shrimp Fit (very small dose, and the shrimp seem to like it) Sotching Oxydator Seachem Purigen to keep the nitrates lower Keeping the pH below 5.5 with peat Things that I don't do often, so could possibly "reset" the tank back to a good streak, are gravel vac and plant trim, so maybe time to try those again. One other problem I used to have was that sometimes a shrimp would suddenly stop eating with a full or partially full digestive tract that doesn't clear out, and then the shrimp will die within a few days.  I suspected it was one of the foods in my rotation - Shrimp Nature Infection, which contains a bunch of herbal plant things.  I've had this in my food rotation for a few years now and generally didn't seem to cause problems, but I removed it from the rotation anyway.  I don't have a lot of adult Golden Bees at this point so I can't really tell if it worked or not. Overall the tank is not too bad - during the good streaks occasionally a shrimp will get berried and hatch babies with a 33-50% survival rate.  So while there are fewer adults now, there are also a bunch of babies roaming around.  I guess this tank will stagger on, but I really do need to take the time to start up a new tank.  (or figure out the problem)

If that is the offspring, then the parents are unlikely to be PRL. I tend to agree with you. There are very few PRLs in Australia. And any that claim to be needs to show proof. PRL genes have to start as PRL. CRS that breed true after x generations doesn't turn it into a PRL. Neither can a Taiwan bee shrimp turn into a PRL despite how ever many generations. I've never seen a PRL with that sort of red colour. I have on Red Wines and Red Shadows - Taiwan bee shrimps. So somewhere down the line one of your shrimp might have been mixed with Taiwan bees and is no longer PRL. It just tanks one shrimp to mess up the genes of a whole colony.
    • sdlTBfanUK
Sorry, missed this one somehow! The PRL look fantastic and the odd ones look part PRL and part Red wine/Red shadow in the colour. They are still very beautiful but ideally should be seperated to help keep the PRL clean if you can do that.  Nice clear photos!
