White bloom

Ok the latest. Chemi-pro been in 48hrs and nothing yet, Friday I received The only one bacteria and I've added that, also today I find more young shrimp, all water parameters fine so I guess it's a waiting game now. It just so dam frustrating

Lol... yes it is frustrating, I have been there many times, but IME, changing too many things to fast creates a bigger mess... sit tight, test one thing at a time, I am confident you will have your tank back better than you expected...

Well here's an update on all that's transpired. It turns out my white bloom decided to become a green algie bloom for reasons beyond me. But with the tireless help from jayc we think we solved it.everything I done in the previous posts didn't work so I sent jayc another photo as things were getting very bad  that's when he clocked it as green algie bloom. So off I went to an aquatic centre and bought myself the 24watt Fish R Fun green killing machine sterilizer, put in the tank and 28hrs later there is evidence thet the tank is starting to clear. I will update with photos proberly every two days to show what's happening or every day if there are marked improvement.Again my thanks must go to jayc for staying with me on this, he'sbeen brilliant Cheers for now and lookout for the photos Richie

this is my tank as it stands before I started using the uv sterilizer  if you look at the first photos you can clearly see it's white bloom then over the coming weeks it changed to this

It's improving all the time all be it slow but I'll post a pic at 15.00 gmt so you can see .

Now then how often should I change/clean external  filter pads while we are going through this process

IME, I would not touch the filter media anymore than once a year, let the beneficial bacteria break down waste on it's own... I would do small partial water changes 10% - 20% at most once a week, the idea is to get water column stabilized... The UV filter should take care of the algae bloom pretty quick... Cut back the overhead lights and sun exposure, small water changes and the UV light will handle the heavy lifting...

OVER REACTION: When my Discus planted tank went as green and thick as pea soup, I did 100% water changes, that came at a cost of water stability, I went to the hardware store and purchased a 55 gallon commercial trash can and I would fill that with RO water and heavily aerated it overnight, do a water change then start the process all over again... But I never touched the filter... Eventually, the green cleared up, as I learned that the overhead T5 lights enabled the algae blooms to start all over again... So no lights, water changes and left the filter alone... Didn't lose any Discus but they were stressed for sure...

Thanks for that ceaser my lights are out I normally do a 40ltrs change every week total volume 225ltr may be a bit more 230ltr. I use my own RO system also use di resin in the unit so it comes out at 0.00 or may be 1 I never leave it go higher than 5 before I change filters. I re-minerals with Bee Shrimp to 180 I take it I carry on the same with that. I also pre-heat the water to 23c. I'll post the first picture in a minute this is 48hrs after first use of uv sterilizer

Big difference in just a few days jayc. Fed them spinach today and they destroyed it,think they were hungry. Keeping the light out just on for photos and changed 12ltr of water just to freshen up for normally change about 35ltr

There is still a bit of a haze and not 100% crystal clear yet. A few more days should do it.

We never got to the bottom of the cause. Have you checked your Nitrate levels yet?

hi jayc this is an up to date reading of Nitrate, in proper light the reading is 0.00 picture doesn't quite do it justice, i didn't do any Nitrate tests during the problem but i did do Ammonia Nitrite KH/GH PH & Phosphate and all came out fine every time, there were no fluctuations at all, i believe i added shrimp just before or just after it started. It appeared not long after i added a scoop full of Bacter AE and i did that to try and start the bio-film

@richiep The usual suspect for an algal bloom is nitrate. So that's a bit weird that we don't see that here. It remains a mystery.

Unless something serious happens this is the last picture, now 17 days and its all but there. No harm done as ive got many young shrimp. It was just dammed annoying.

Much better, but still doesn't look completely clear. Maybe a bit longer.
