Mixing Neocaridina color variants... Selective breeding

@ashrimplab

Recommended Posts

I'm curious to know if there are any other shrimp breeders with mixed Neocaridina davidi tanks which have yielded unique colors and patterns?

I have been working on this for a while, and interestingly have not had shrimp revert to wild coloring, but instead have developed some interesting colors and surprising patterns in groups of offspring.

Anyone else find this to be true?

Thanks, @farmdee

I've seen a few other people try this route, and have seen some interesting colored offspring from one breeder! He sells a "Skrittles" mix and has had some interesting colored shrimp. He does get wild colored offspring though, but he culls these from the "rainbow" tank. His name is Lucas Bretz and his website is LRBAquatics. He has pictures on FB though of his interesting shrimp.

Someone else, I think, mixed together Bloody Mary and Blue Dream which resulted in a shrimp that was red and blue.

I have a tank where several colors were mixed. I had some nice offsprings, especially a brown/red (burgundy) female with a stripe. Very intersting.

I find it so fascinating, though most people I have talked to like to keep one color. I love looking into my mixed tank as I'm routinely finding new colors/patterns now.  I have a red/blue marble line, and a multicolor koi pattern.  I have some pictures on my @farmdee6 Twitter- don't know how to put here. I'm hoping to have some success with orange/blue soon too.

Same here. Based on this burgundy shrimp, I think I will monitor closely this "mixed" tank, throw in it what I have left in colors: carbon rili, red cherries, orange and blue carbon. i'll see what pops up.

Those critters are amazing, I have yet to find why my female cherries in the garden pond are so big (1 inch easy) and so red,as the ones I care in my tank are smaller, an average .6 inch, and less red for the most...

Well, I have a few at theshrimpshop.com and am in the process of adding more.

I have had this experiment going for some time now. I'll be sharing on my channel as well.  https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCw7-7eLnHRXG6_PW3PxE7Rg?app=m&persist_app=1

My orange/blue dragon is debuting soon, and many photos to share of other oddities.  It has been a blast... Hoping others will share too.

Do you have pics of your burgundy female with a stripe?  I have a berried dark blue with orange stripe- and can't wait to see what the shrimplets look like!

Better late than never.

I finally succed matching my time, and the moment where this female finally shows: Picture makes her appear a bit brown, but she is more a wine pattern. She rather look like a good Merlot, or a Cabernet-Merlot than a Moccachino ;)

so I just posted some pics on my Welcome "ME" topic... probably should have posted them here :) I'll just post a couple here. I'm going for random patterns of black-blue, dream-blue, velvet-blue, light back-stripe. I've still got a-ways to go population wise but here's two that are looking promising! :)

I had stack like that in my old choc tank, they were my culls though as I was after a fire grade chocolate. Your Koi is similar to when I worked on a Chocolate Rilli but never got there.

This blue red marble pattern developed from chocolates, and also from blue dream--  the koi was in a mix tank and I have several multi colored shrimp now.  I and am interested to see if the coloring carries through to the shrimplets.

I have several other interesting color morphs-  I'll try to get some video up soon.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
