Struggling to keep my shrimps alive...

Sprae

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I've been quiet lately as I've struggled to control a losing battle to keep my beloved shrimps alive. Just wanted to let off some frustration...

Since adding the chiller + filter system 2 months ago, I've kept losing shrimps. Initially I've thought it was pH imbalance but since its stabilized to 6.5-6.6 and I've kept losing shrimps close to 50% left.

I'm at my wits end as I've tested and tested my WP without any issues other than high TDS of 160ppm or EC 330. Did a 10% water change yesterday and lost 2 SS CRS today :sorrow:

I'll keep analyzing what's wrong and try and keep my existing shrimps alive...

+ 1 on the air stone. Have you changed food or even media? New net? Try to rule out all the lil things. Feeling for ya

There's plenty of oxygen, I've got loads of moss and especially with the Oxydator in the tank as well so I don't think that's an issue.

Like I said, the only thing new is the new filter system plus chiller. The temperature is set to 22-23c at all times too.

It's also more of a constant lose of 1 or 2 shrimps everyday or every other day for the past 2 months. If it was chemicals or some dramatic, I'd be losing more at short periods.

sorry for your loss mate, imo the edge is too unstable to keep high grades like crs, i think you will be sweet once you upgrade to a larger tank! get a ADA garden L!!!

Hi Sprae, sorry to hear about the issues.... I'm sure you've done this but check your Nitrates. Hi Nitrates can cause a slow death to shrimps..even if the spike is sorted, the damage is done, and over the course of 1-4 weeks, deaths may still occur. Just to humor us, add an air stone ASAP .... what minerals/additives do you add in your tanks ... I'll send you a homemade/secret formula ! Please PM me your address again....

Aarrgh, just lost another one!!!

Thanks for the offer BB. I'll add an airstone but I don't think it's going to help. I'll double check the nitrates again but I did a 10% water change just yesterday. All I do now is RO plus salty shrimp minerals.

Personally I think it could be bacteria or something as constant loses is just weird. I hope there's some CRS left into the the next year...

I reckon my secret potion will fix the issue.....

Don't worry, as long as you believe in Santa, you'll have shrimps on Xmas.....

That sucks Sprae. If the issue is bacterial a UV steriliser may assist in stopping it spread. Do your shrimp look normal or have they lost colour or has the red gone slightly darker ?

This homemade secret potion / formula that BB speaks of sounds very intriguing. If your losing 1 a say and you can't figure I out, I guess it can't hurt.

Keep your chin up mate, unfortunately most of us have been there and know exactly how helpless you feel.

I have an ultrasonic 9w, but that might be over kill for your tank. At the moment anything is better than nothing.

Sorry to hear about your losses mate.

I had a similar thing happening when I setup my new tank a few months ago.

Ended up putting it down to tank not cycled properly.

Are you sure your filter cycled properly when putting the new one in?

What sort of chiller do you have?

What is the core made of?

Is it intended for use with invertebrates?

Just a thought, looking at timing of you losses.

I have a Resun C0500 chiller with a titanium core which seems to be fine with my Shrimp.

I'm still going through daily losses :(

It's been fully cycled tank with existing HOB for over a year and at one point (just 2 months ago) I had over 60 shrimps as I'd be lucky if there's 20 in there left now. I've got a JBJ mini-arctica chiller with Titanium core too. The new filter was seeded with old media but still should be an issue now that 2 months without ever having an ammonia spike.

Just received BB's secret recipe which I'll start soon.

I'll need to find a LFS with stock of a inline UV steriliser that will fit the 12/16mm 2213 tubes. Does such a UV steriliser exist? Anyone in Melbourne know where I can get one ASAP?

Hi,

Firstly, as a newbie that has lost shrimps (!@#$@^ heatwave!) I really know how you feel.

I've got an inline UV sterilizer that fits in with a 16mm tube, so yes, they do exist.

Sorry cant be of much help but all the best with the shrimps

I know this is going to be overkill, but these are on special and cheaper than the lower wattage units on the online store.

http://www.aquariumonlinestore.com.au/products-page/uv-sterilizers/inline-uv-sterilizer-18watt/

They run a graduated hose barb from 12mm to 25mm iirc. I'm running the 11w on my planted tank myself.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
