I was very kindly gifted one of the new Glass Shrimper Nets by @newbreed at the National Shrimp Championships- Thank you Jamie.

Review:

Look and feel:

The glass is light, but thick and strong enough to resist bashing against tank glass and during washing. The hollow handle is 40cm in length.

First thoughts:

Because the Glass Shrimper net is unlike any other net I have handled before, it took some getting used to wielding it correctly and moving at correct angles and directions under the water. I felt like a bit of a buffoon at first!

What I like about it:

-The shrimp are not stressed when you try and catch them, most get into the glass net themselves. A slow to moderate speed approach does not upset them at all.

-When you put your finger over the handle hole at the top, you can lift the shrimp out of the tank without them being exposed to air and out of the water at all, avoiding stress. I found this really cool when catching shrimp for sorting.

-The shrimp move into the handle when you hold the net horizontal and this enables excellent viewing: when put in front of a light, you are able to see dark shrimp saddles that are usually not visible with the naked eye in dark shrimp like king kongs or dark tigers. I also found this excellent for culling shrimp as I could inspect them closer than I could have ever done before without stressing them too much, making sorting easier.

- I am able to sterilise this glass shrimper net properly unlike regular nets

- I also successfully used it as a glass feeding chute to transfer powder food into a feeding dish without getting lost in the current by injecting the food directly into the handle and tipping it out on the feeding dish without getting my hands in the tank.

Tip: this net works on the principle that you put the Glass shrimper net against a surface like the tank glass or moss until the shrimp swims to the back or to the handle, then you can move the shrimp to the water surface. It will not work in cornered surfaces for obvious reasons.

Because of the reduced shrimp stress and easy close-up inspection, I give this very useful Glass Shrimper net ???? out of 5 stars.

This is especially critical with berried shrimps to reduce the stress of moving them.

Thanks heaps @KeenShrimp!

Like you I initially felt really clumsy using this new glass net! And tried to catch the shrimp as I do with normal nets, lol, was frustrating! But after practice it's a huge difference!

And thank you for these extra ideas and uses, which I had not considered. I may have to attempt sexing some tigers with this method now!!

Many Thanks once again!!

@newbreed,

do you know the manufacturer to pass on some feedback?

Like, even though I haven't got one ...yet, I think a square ended glass net would be a better shape for catching shrimp in the corners of the tank.

Very good point! I will see if I can get that feedback to the right person!

@newbreed maybe they could make an attachment, plastic similar to the uplift pipe extensions on a UGF, round to go into the glass net and square on the other end for the use as stated by @jayc wouldn't need to be too big and cumbersome.

Ideally catching shrimp in the corner is still easier with the glass shrimp net anyway as when you release your thumb/finger from the tube it would draw the shrimp in with the water entering the tube anyway, wouldn't it, I don't have one yet so only guessing from the how to use instructions.

@zn30 great idea. Just unsure on whether it would be as clear as the glass but a great suggestion.

The main idea of the hole in top is also  Once shrimp are caught you put your finger over it to stop water flowing back out when moving, so they don't realise they're moving. Not so much as a suction option.

The mechanics of it takes a bit of getting used to I must admit, but need to catch some shrimp this morning, so I will get some more practice! ?

I do like the sound of the adaptor.

Yeh @newbreed the adaptor would probably be a plastic so it would be slightly milky. Good point on putting your finger over the opening to keep the shrimp in place once caught, otherwise they would swim back out when extracting the net from the tank.

Good luck with the catch today, practice makes perfect.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
