Shrimp rack advice

Hello knowledgable shrimp keepers/breeders,

I'm planning on building a rack system which I'm drafting up and I'm looking for ideas/suggestions/advice! Building and designing is the fun part :)

I've never had a shrimp rack before but I have built a Betta dividing/grow out tank from acrylic before which had several compartments and shared a single sump.

1) What are people's thoughts on plumbing several tanks by drilling a bulkhead to a single sump? Or

Should they each be filtered individually with sponge filters and use the plumbing simply for water changes?

I wanted to consider possible quarantine issues and/or keeping different types of shrimp like crystal reds and cherries etc.

I would ideally like it to be easy to maintain so I'm not spending ALL my time doing maintenance otherwise my partner may actually kill me :P

2) I was thinking of having several 2 ft tanks on the rack. Would this work and be cost efficient?

What are people's experiences with different tank sizes and actually buying the tanks? (I'm in Melb Aust and don't know anyone who can make them or order them in bulk cheap). Say 12-16 tanks to start? :P

3) Should I invest in a ro unit? Does anyone have suggestions?

4) What substrate if any do people recommend?

5) Any other suggestions and advice from experience is much appreciated if I've missed any questions :)

Cheers!

Bill

Ok I'm leaning towards setting up the tanks with plumbing that will help remove water during a water change only and having sponge filters in each tank OR

Setting up some old 3 and 4 ft tanks I found at the side of the road one day (score!) with dividers. Thoughts?

Also bump :)
