Help me pick my shrimp! :D

Hello everyone!

I am going to place my order through http://www.shrimpfever.com/shop/category/shrimp/livestock-shrimp/caridina-shrimp-only/ shrimp fever today, and I wanted to get some feed back from you all about what I should get in order to eventually accomplish my goals! My main goal is to create a TiBee that is much more resilient than a regular CRS, and try and open keeping caridina shrimp up to the east coast of canada. Locally the only bred shrimp you can get are cherries, and occasionally blue velvet's. I want to cross these shrimp to make a more robust easier to keep caridina shrimp that is still striking to look at !

Tigers are larger making them a better choice for many aquarists who complain shrimp are too small to see. The white/red is always the most striking in a planted tank IMHO

Here is the stock I want to order today to start with!

6 black TiBee shrimp,

6A/A+ CRS

4S/S+ CRS

8 Tigers and possibly 2 golden/snow white shrimp

Alternatively if you think this would be better I can just get CRS and Tigers (in greater number as they are actually the cheapest!) The tibees are the more expensive of the lots, and the black tibees might not help me that much anyway. ( Just wanted to diversify the genes. I could also get 1 tangerine tiger or something)  Going the other way I would likely get about:

15A/A+ CRS, 5S/S+ CRS 10  regular tigers

Please let me know what you would order to get shrimp like the ones I am picturing eventually!

My tank parameters are currently ph 6.8-6.9 and 75f. Do I need to adjust them? If so what is the best way to drop the PH? My tap water is about 7.2 so Ideally I could get them acclimated to higher ph, but if not I am willing to do RO/DI.

ideally I want to make something looking like this:

I would go with the second order. If you can get blonde tigers it seems to be the tiger that people are using in australia to mix to get the red tibee patterns.

I am the ph he slightly high for the crs but should be ok for the tiger. you might want to lower the temp a degree or two but 75 shouldnt be a issue. Maybe ask the person that you are buying from what temp they are using.

I have used what we call Taitibees to get these results. Tiger x TB then cross these babies  back to each other , I added Snow Whites, CRS  and more Taitibees. image.jpgimage.jpg

I Didn't see Disciples post in time or I would have gotten Blonde OEBT. This is what I went with in the end.

1  Tropica Micranthemum MonteCarlo 1 2 grow
8 CRS A/A+
6 CRS S/S+
8 Regular Tiger
2 Tangerine Tigers (getting these to diversify genetics and could prove to be interesting if things don't work with the tibees)
1 Golden/ white bee (ideally white) getting this to diversify genetics

Hopefully things will work out. Worst case scenario I will be 50 $ poorer and have a tiger tank. haha.

this was his reponse but it doesn't cover the tigers.

"So Liv, the crystal shrimps are at a ph of 6.0-6.4 but neocaridina cherry types are all 7.0-7.5ph
so it depends which shrimp you want to keep."

So I'm kind of stuck. That said, I know many people do keep crystal shrimp with the tap water here. If I use RO/DI water then I will need to constantly dose and it is more likely that my water will fluctuate. So I am going in favor of using the same tap water every time so that things are consistent.

So I found out that my order hasn't been invoiced/processed yet.

Do you think it might be a good idea to change it to get a few OEBT and tangerine tigers instead of the CRS? Or just get a reduced number of CRS?

I am scared to lose a bunch of money on shrimp because I can't get the PH down and stable.

---edit--- They are out of OEBT so I can basically only get tangerines and tigers. Still do you think this is worth doing?

In the end since the order isn't processed yet I said If things aren't bagged and tagged he could swap things to be this:

Lot 1 (bold items have changed, and no more white/golden bee):
1 Monto carlo 1-2-grow cup
4 black Tibees
4 CRS A/A+
4 CRS S/S+
8 Tiger
2 Tangerine Tigers

Since the Tibees are more tolerant of higher PH.

Hello @LaxLogic

I had a quick look at the online shop. If you are aiming for the red Tibee instead of getting 4 black tibee I saw they have Red Pinto Michlings Juvies. I think they might be a better option if you aim is the Red Tibees.

Yeah those may have worked, but would also be more expensive (almost double the black tibees) and while things weren't processed yet it seems that he would need to delay the whole order by a day to make any changes, so Instead I paid the invoice and let it go with these:

1  Tropica Micranthemum MonteCarlo 1 2 grow
8 CRS A/A+
6 CRS S/S+
8 Regular Tiger
2 Tangerine Tigers (getting these to diversify genetics and could prove to be interesting if things don't work with the tibees)
1 Golden/ white bee (ideally white) getting this to diversify genetics

I still have the 10 mixed tigers so that should be good, and I really don't think I will lose all my CRS, so I have my fingers crossed. If the crs can mate with the Tigers then their offspring will be quite resilient! I just hope I get a decent gender mix! (especially of the tigers!)

Had some issues getting the shipping info sorted out so it delayed shipping by a day, but this meant he altered the order back to the earlier requested change.

1 Monto carlo 1-2-grow cup
4 black Tibees
4 CRS A/A+
4 CRS S/S+
8 Tiger
2 Tangerine Tigers

Is what will be shipping out tomorrow. Wow. What an ordeal haha.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Hi Guys,  Does anyone know where to buy PRL shrimps in WA, not the CRS please. Thanks Regards

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
