Hi guys not sure if this is the right section to post but does anyone here keep shrimp with plants? And if so how do you dose fertiliser?

I have been keeping some cherries in a planted tank for over half a year now and have been using flourish as well as leafzone and co2 but I am planning on moving away from the premade liquid ferts to a dry mix that would be significantly cheaper.

As long as there's no copper in your fertiliser the shrimp should be fine. I personally use borneowild Ferrum at half dose, but only because I don't have much plants yet. When I get more planted I'll go full dose.

I keep red cherry in high light tank wiht lot of ferts... im using Estimate index.

Red cherry and neos dont have problem with ferts.

As above, as long as no copper in the ferts you should be good. But best to check here with the ferts you want to use in case someone has already done the hard yards for you.

Thanks for all the replies guys, really appreciated!

I am planning on buying a dry mix from a place called simple grow in wetherill park, there is some info about aquarist using their mix in their tanks and should be cheaper. Has anyone heard of them before?

Any reconmendations on where I would get fertiliser from SL aqua?

I will head to Simple grow today and ask about what is in their trace element mix before diving into using it.

Hi Santa,

I have had very good results with the Seachem Aquavitro Envy: it consists of amino acids and vitamins in absorbable form for plants. It does what it says: my mosses are all super green and I have not had an increase in algae ( to be fair, I have recently bought a lot of snails). In my experience it is 100 percent shrimp safe as I have tried it with TB, CRS, Tiger and Neo-types for a few months now. My brown diatom layer on some of my leaves have disappeared too.

Personally I don't use any ferts. I believe good strong lighting is plenty. I'm running a 14,000k 150wwtal halide on my set up.

Nice looking tank mate!

You don't have many issues with algae at all with such a strong light and no ferts or CO2?

Thanks Santa. Will try getting better PIC but hard with the light being so strong lol. No not really the shrimp keep most of it away. Had a staghorn outbreak on my sponge filter but just took it out and washed it. Seems to have worked lol

      It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

      I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

      Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

      You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
