As I've stated before I've kept a number of tanks and occupants ranging from native fish to eels but have had an 8 year hiatus.

I have a small daughter and have rediscovered the joy of tanks now with inverts.

The executive summary is I got a dozen cherries, they bred then the adults died.

I've restocked and am keeping a close eye on the tank (as well as reducing the number of fish) and got another free tank that I am currently cycling. 

Has anyone out there used similar wood to this and found that it's clouding the water? I soaked it for two weeks but it seems to be releasing a bit of slime...?

It looks like gold vine , I found it secreted or got covered in a white slime when first put into a tank but the slime is harmless to shrimp. Mine cleared up within a month - I had boiled and soaked it before putting it in the tank and had been assured it was shrimp safe. I never had any issues with the shrimp. - some seemed to graze on the slime. The vines are 3 years old now and still very good.

Did you test your water parameter at the time the adults were dying? Also what are your water parameters currently? It will help us give you a reason for the deaths.

@Unagi42 I have gold vine in my tank and the shrimp graze on it. I agree with @ineke that it initially has slime all over it but it clears up pretty quickly. Water parameters will tell a story about what is happening in your tank.

@ineke &@larrymull thanks it's gold vine. I boiled, soaked and scrubbed the wood again and have thrown it back in the tank. I'll pop fish and shrimp back into the tank and try again.

Hey mate, all readings at normal but pH was a bit high at around 7.6.

I have done a bunch of water changes and put a fresh dozen cherries in and they seem happy enough to berry so we'll see how it goes.

My daughter picked the new tank fish (blue/purple guppies). I picked purple rasbora and am hoping to get some coolie loaches in there as well.

i popped a few cherries in but they spent the whole time hiding as the guppies are too active and nippy for them. The rasbora are fine.

so I popped the cherries back in the other tank and am contemplating loaches as bottom feeders.
