Plants that aren't good with shrimp

Are there any plants you shouldn't keep with shrimp (other than incorrect water conditions, ect)?

I've heard that freshly cut anubias shouldn't be kept with shrimp as they leach some sort of poison.

Does anyone know if bolbitis is absolutely safe for shrimp?

I've got bolbitis with King Kong crs CBS cherries etc all seem fine been in there for months

I have heard that HC is not a good idea as the shrimp can get stuck in it.... But saying that i am going to be using it in my scape..

Ive heard that anubias is bad for shrimp as well

I personally have some anubias nana in with my CRS and Cherries and haven't seen a problem , but i haven't cut the plant either.

I heard crypts if you cut or break them ..... Can't remember where or anything... just passing on the rumour ...

good rumours are plausible... These are plausible. I guess it depends on the volume of water too. I had some crypt that the shrimp used to love to hang around in was a 500ltr tank though. But still never really broke or fresh cut them.

The rumour about Anubias was started about five years ago by a hobbyist who lost most of his shrimp after heavily pruning his Anubias.

I agree the sap could be poisonous in large amounts.Most of us are aware that Anubias and Crypts are rarely eaten,even by herbivores.This is because the sap of Aroids has a bitter taste,most likely a defence to avoid being eaten.I have noticed the same smell with other Aroids and also that water in a bucket with a lot of aroid clippings will foul very quickly,so that oxygen deprivation could also be part of the problem.I suggest that,say,in a 60cm tank,a few broken or cut Anubias leaves would not pose a problem but I will let someone else test this with a high grade CRS.

Another thing about Aroids is that their sap will sting your hands if you have any tiny cuts in your skin.

Best avoided unless you are very aware of the potential when pruning plants.

Calcium oxalate is the poisonous culprit in Aroids.

The most famous and sensible use is found with some African Tribes.They take the sap of Dieffenbachias [Dumb Cane] and feed it to their wives.This makes their tongues and throats swell so they can't nag the man of the house.

So the answer is YES,Anubias are a risk.

I have heard this too, with both crypts and anubis,

Apparently if it gets cut, something leeches out into the water which is not good for the shrimp.

Not exactly sure with the details but thats what i heard/read

I also read up on about Anubias & Crypt plants should not be in shrimp tanks (toxic substance) by Kenshin from an article "Planetinverts.com"...Just type anubias and crypt in the search window and you should retrieve the article about Breeding Soft Water Shrimps (seven paragraphs down)...Interesting article...No mention of Bollbitis

I just wondered about bolbitis as you rarely see it in peoples shrimp tanks (in comparison to other really popular plants like the java ferns or mosses). Maybe it is simply because bolbitis isn't that popular to begin with.

Wow that is a first I heard about plants killing shrimps. Only thing that kills my shrimps is too much co2. I have done heavy trims and even pulled everything out and mixed the Ada soil and they are all ok.

Bolbitus is fine, always had it in with shrimps and lots of it too ;)
