New Australian shrimp species

Jumping the gun a little but it has taken 2 years to get here ( I am excited), I found 2 new shrimp species on the Atherton tablelands the first one was 2 years ago and the DNA has confirmed its new and at last some one is going to describe it and we get to name it.

I think it has loads of potential for the hobby because the Female has a slight red colour and the Male a slight blue colour, with breeding any thing is possible, all the shrimp we have now started out plain compared to what they are now. It gets to 2.5cm and has nice big eggs, breeding is a little hard at the moment in time it will get easier, It is not fussy about the water parameters PH around 7.2 and medium hardness and will take temps up to 28c so far, eats any thing and is reasonably bold.

Here is a couple of KRAPY photos taken in the field, With moving house I don't have many in stock to get going so back to collect more, I need more to be deposited in the QLD museum and for ID any way, the ones I have now are spoken for.

The other new one is 3.5cm and looks a bit like this one.

Sorry about the krap photos, but as I said I am excited about this one. Botom photo the Male is top left, the rest are Female

Nice Bob, be good to get pictures of them in an aquarium to get a better idea of their colouration.

When I get a some on the go I will be sending some to a few people to play with and get them going.

I am about leave and to go to Malanda to get some more of of the new one and Saturday week I will have some of the other new ones in my position at last.

The exciting development is, the scientist that is going to describe them want to do a trip to the Mcllwraith Range on cape york to look for new species, he thinks it will have lots of new ones to be found.

There is still so much to be found here in good old Australia.

Bob

Very nice Bob, how are these coming along? Any of them breeding for you yet?

Can't wait to see them in water, they do look really interesting and sound promising in the ease of breeding stakes.

And I agree with colour diamorphic parents there should be a lot of potential to create/ get other stronger colours established and breeding true.

In the process now, thankfully with so many tanks I can hijack media, plants and what not to establish it fairly quickly. Really looking forward to seeing them.

It has been a few weeks now and I have done a couple of large water changes. I tested the water parameters this morning, GH6 and KH2, TDS 140 and PH 7.5. Obviously the PH is off but there isn't anything in the tank that should cause the PH to rise to this figure so I will just run the tank for another month with 10% weekly water changes (probably just with RO water) and see where we are at that point. The RO water tests at PH6, and the KH and GH in the tank could come down as they are at the upper limits for Caridina shrimps! There are only about 10 very small snails in there at this point, but they seem to be doing well enough.

I believe these to be very rare in Australia so you may even consider making it a longer term plan and produce your own by starting with the best CRS you can get as that is where the pure lines started! Depends how patient and interested in the project you are, but would save money as well? If I recall correctly it takes from 8 generations of selective breeding? They sell them at micro aquatic shop but do not ship to Western Australia, but that means they are available in Australia. https://microaquaticshop.com.au/products/pure-red-line-grade-ss-shrimp Good luck and just maybe smeone on here may point you in the right direction or be able to supply you with some.

Yes it’s super accurate to position where I want now and stay there- I am satisfied.  All the fish and shrimpers are doing excellent! Coming up on 4 years running!

You must be pleased with that, it looks better and is much more robust and less likely to damage or leaks! The tank looks very natural now it has been running for a time. I see the ember tetras, how are the blue shrimp doing, I see a few? The cat and dog look very content and unimpressed, lol.
